The work contained in this volume is representative of the presentations made by the participants at the Fifth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibra tional Spectroscopy, which was held at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, from June 3 to 7, 1991. The conference was the fifth in a biennial series initiated in 1982 by Prof. George H. Atkinson (University of Arizona) at Lake Placid, USA, and subsequently convened by Prof. Alfred Laubereau (University of Bayreuth, Germany) and Dr. Manfred Stockburger (Max-Planck Institut, G6ttingen, Ger many) at Bayreuth-BischofsgrUn, Germany, in 1985, by Prof. Joop D.W. Van Voorst (University of Amsterdam) at Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in 1987, and by Prof. Thomas G. Spiro (princeton University) at Princeton, USA, in 1989. The purpose of the conference is to bring together researchers from various disciplines and provide a forum for discussion of the latest advances in time resolved spectroscopies concerned with transient vibrational phenomena and their application to fundamental scientific and engineering studies. The 167 registered participants, including 46 students, from 14 different countries, represented a wide range of scientific disciplines, and clearly indicated that the field continues to expand into new areas of physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Their enthusiasm and the originality and quality of the contributions presented produced a very successful and enjoyable conference.

Laser ablation describes the interaction of intense optical fields with matter, in which atoms are selectively driven off by thermal or nonthermal mechanisms. The field of laser ablation physics is advancing so rapidly that its principal results are seen only in specialized journals and conferences. This is the first book that combines the most recent results in this rapidly advancing field with authoritative treatment of laser ablation and its applications, including the physics of high-power laser-matter interaction. Time is an important factor in physical and natural sciences. It characterizes the progress of chemical and biochemical processes. Mass spectrometry provides the means to study molecular structures by detecting gas-phase ions with the unique mass-to-charge ratios. Time-resolved mass spectrometry (TRMS) allows one to differentiate between chemical states that can be observed sequentially at different time points. Real-time mass spectrometric monitoring enables recording data continuously with a specified temporal resolution. The TRMS approaches – introduced during the past few decades – have shown temporal resolutions ranging from hours down to microseconds and beyond. This text covers the key aspects of TRMS. It introduces ion sources, mass analyzers, and interfaces utilized in time-resolved measurements; discusses the influence of data acquisition and treatment; finally, it reviews most prominent applications of TRMS – in the studies of reaction kinetics and mechanism, physicochemical phenomena, protein structure dynamics, biocatalysis, and metabolic profiling. The first part of this thesis is devoted to ultrafast relaxation processes in quasi-one-dimensional organic molecular crystals. Crystalline samples of the perylene derivative MePTCDI are employed as a model system. Processes concerning the excitonic and phononic relaxation are investigated in time domain using various experimental techniques of optical ultrafast spectroscopy. The experimental setups attain a time-resolution of 20 femtoseconds. Free excitons at wavevector k=0 are formed in a molecular crystal by optical excitation of the lowest electronic transitions. Thereby, various intramolecular and intermolecular vibrational degrees of freedom are excited simultaneously. The excitation by fs-laser pulses results in the composition of coherent vibrational wave packets. Both, higher-energetic oscillations caused by intramolecular vibrations (internal phonons) and, for the first time in a quasi-one-dimensional organic system, lower-energetic modulations which are related to coherent lattice phonons (external phonons) are observed. The coherence of both types of phonons in the electronic ground state is damped at room temperature within a few ps. Besides phononic coherence, optical excitation by fs-laser pulses additionally induces electronic coherence of the optical transitions. The electronic coherence decays with the dephasing time T2. In spite of the high time-resolution, finally it was not possible to time resolve the dephasing of the lowest excitonic transition - however, we can estimated it to be in the range of 17fs
