Abstract: An overview of federally supported nutrition research and training projects concludes that human nutrition research in the U.S. requires a federal focus for planning and coordination. Activities and expenditures in human nutrition research, training and education during FY 1979 are described in Part I. Part II identifies critical issues and needs in nutrition research, training and professional personnel development for the next decade. In Part III, conclusions and recommendations for increasing the productivity and effectiveness of domestic federal human nutrition research and training programs are presented. These encourage information exchange among federal agencies that support nutrition research and education at all levels. Appendices review the legislative authorities and interdepartmental coordinating mechanisms for human nutrition research and training in this country. (cj).
