Book Description
The general aim of the study is to offer mathematical model of the process, which can allow crack identification in the compressor or turbine blade of aircraft gas-turbine engine in operation. Within the frameworks of this goal cracked blade non-linear dynamic model was elaborated and introduced to the global model of the bladed disk. Crack induced non-linearity was taken into account applying contact analysis elements in conjunction with harmonic balance method. For system size reduction the sub-structuring methodology using fixed-interface method was applied. It supposes the crack location to be considered as interface between two dependent, in this case, substructures. Such approach was applied to the both uncoupled cracked blade and bladed disk models. Also considering uncoupled cracked blade the centrifugal forces effect was examined. It was concluded, that depending on crack properties (location and size), it will be enough to use the linear crack presence formulation supposing crack to be always open (initial gap). During simulation of the bladed disk forced response containing cracked blade the effect of blade mistuning was simulated. Simulation results shown that at certain level of mistuning it becomes impossible to separate cracked blade response. Furthermore such crack detectability decreases with absence of cracked blade frequency localization. The last one phenomenon is very important diagnostic sign, which simplifies cracked blade detection at almost all cases. The last phase of the work was devoted to simulation of blade tip-timing method application for cracked blade identification. It consisted in blade arriving time generation, blade tip amplitudes reconstruction and bladed disk frequency response calculation on the base of measured (simulated) time data. Such approach allowed us to identify cracked blade in the same way as in frequency response analysis. Generally speaking, blade tip-timing method can be used as the part of engine health monitoring system for compressor or turbine blades dynamic performances monitoring.

Book Description
In this paper, a bank of Kalman filters is applied to aircraft gas turbine engine sensor and actuator fault detection and isolation (FDI) in conjunction with the detection of component faults. This approach uses multiple Kalman filters, each of which is designed for detecting a specific sensor or actuator fault. In the event that a fault does occur, all filters except the one using the correct hypothesis will produce large estimation errors, thereby isolating the specific fault. In the meantime, a set of parameters that indicate engine component performance is estimated for the detection of abrupt degradation. The proposed FDI approach is applied to a nonlinear engine simulation at nominal and aged conditions, and the evaluation results for various engine faults at cruise operating conditions are given. The ability of the proposed approach to reliably detect and isolate sensor and actuator faults is demonstrated. (7 tables, 4 figures, 17 refs.).

Book Description
In this report, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) system which utilizes a bank of Kalman filters is developed for aircraft engine sensor and actuator FDI in conjunction with the detection of component faults. This FDI approach uses multiple Kalman filters, each of which is designed based on a specific hypothesis for detecting a specific sensor or actuator fault. In the event that a fault does occur, all filters except the one using the correct hypothesis will produce large estimation errors, from which a specific fault is isolated. In the meantime, a set of parameters that indicate engine component performance is estimated for the detection of abrupt degradation. The performance of the FDI system is evaluated against a nonlinear engine simulation for various engine faults at cruise operating conditions. In order to mimic the real engine environment, the nonlinear simulation is executed not only at the nominal, or healthy, condition but also at aged conditions. When the FDI system designed at the healthy condition is applied to an aged engine, the effectiveness of the FDI system is impacted by the mismatch in the engine health condition. Depending on its severity, this mismatch can cause the FDI system to generate incorrect diagnostic results, such as false alarms and missed detections. To partially recover the nominal performance, two approaches, which incorporate information regarding the engine s aging condition in the FDI system, will be discussed and evaluated. The results indicate that the proposed FDI system is promising for reliable diagnostics of aircraft engines.Kobayashi, Takahisa and Simon, Donald L. Book Description
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Aerospace Technology, grade: First class, Coventry University, course: Aerospace Engineering, language: English, abstract: This report paper explains the roll of a turbine blade and its analysis in today's jet engines. The report first discusses all the relevant information about how the conclusion of the turbine blade was reached from all the other probable components in the engine, then it moves on the full analysis of the turbine blade. Discussing about the maintenance and testing of the blade to see where the industry is and where its heading, then it moves on to the failure analysis. This shows the major pitfalls in the design of the blade and if a failure occurs, how the aircraft I built to react to such an incident. Material inspection and possible causes of failure is also discussed next, deformation characteristics due to thermally induced stress and new methods to prevent such failures is looked into.

Book Description
This thesis describes the development of a new technique to solve an important industrial inspection requirement for a high-value jet-engine component. The work – and the story told in the thesis – stretches all the way from the fundamentals of wave propagation in anisotropic material and ultrasonic array imaging through to device production and site trials. The book includes a description of a new method to determine crystallographic orientation from 2D ultrasonic array data. Another new method is described that enables volumetric images of an anisotropic material to be generated from 2D ultrasonic array data, based on measured crystallographic orientation. After extensive modeling, a suitable 2D array and deployment fixtures were manufactured and tested on in situ turbine blades in real engines. The final site trial indicated an order of magnitude improvement over the best existing technique in the detectability of a certain type of root cracking. The Development of a 2D Ultrasonic Array Inspection for Single Crystal Turbine Blades should be an inspiration for those starting out on doctoral degrees as it shows the complete development cycle from basic science to industrial usage.
