This study investigates factors, which might be linked to poor performance of National Certificate (Vocational) Level 2 mathematics students at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in Tshwane. The main research question was: What are the possible factors that might be linked to poor performance of NC(V) Level 2 Mathematics students at a TVET College in Tshwane? In order to answer the primary question, the following sub-questions were formulated: iÌ80́(℗ʺ Which mathematics misconceptions and errors do these students have or make? iÌ80́(℗ʺ To what do students attribute their poor performance in mathematics? iÌ80́(℗ʺ What are the lecturersaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø views on studentsaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø performance? This study is qualitative in nature. Data was collected through studentsaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø examination scripts (12 students) to analyse misconceptions and errors in Algebra. The misconceptions and errors were categorised into false concepts; adding unlike terms; partial application of rules; ignoring rule restrictions and slips. Interviews with students (17 students) were used to investigate what students attribute their poor performance in mathematics to. Interviews with lecturers (five lecturers) examined what lecturers perceive as contributing to their studentsaÌ22́Ơ4́Ø poor performance in mathematics. Factors that could be linked to poor performance in mathematics were revealed by both students and lecturers. The findings of this study revealed that students fail NC(V) Level 2 mathematics because they have misconceptions. The misconceptions include false concepts, adding unlike terms and partial application of rules. False concepts and addition of unlike terms indicate lack of conceptual understanding. Partial application of rules shows that the student has insufficient knowledge required to solve the problem and therefore not difficult to correct as compared to false concepts and addition of unlike terms. The study also revealed that students struggle mostly with fractions, simultaneous equations and factorisation. The interviews with students and lecturers revealed factors that could be linked to poor performance in mathematics, which were grouped as follows: Student level factors: absenteeism; late coming; mathematical background; students blaming themselves; failure to do classwork or homework or assignments; negative attitude and fear towards mathematics; enrolling students who come from special schools; socio-economic status; lack of practice; peer pressure. College level factors: teaching strategies; enrolment, which takes place until second term; students with different mathematical background in one class; un-verified entry qualifications.

Such scholarship is displayed through a teacher’s grasp of, and response to, the relationships between knowledge of content, teaching and learning in ways that attest to practice as being complex and interwoven. One of the major challenges of sustainable development is the interdisciplinary nature of the issues involved. To this end, a team of conservation biologists, hunters, tourist operators, ranchers, wildlife and land managers, ecologists, veterinarians and economists was convened to discuss whether wildlife outside protected areas in Africa can be conserved in the face of agricultural expansion and human population growth. They reached the unequivocal - if controversial - conclusion that wildlife can be an economic asset, especially in the African savannas, if this wildlife can be sustainably utilized through safari hunting and tourism. Using the African savannas as an example, Wildlife Conservation by Sustainable Use shows that in many instances sustainable wildlife utilization comprises an even better form of land use than livestock keeping. Even when population pressure is high, as in agricultural areas or in humid zones, and wild animal species can pose a serious cost to agriculture, these costs are mainly caused by small species with a low potential for safari hunting. Although ranching has a very low rate of return and is hardly ever profitable, the biggest obstacle to the model of sustainable wildlife use outlined in Wildlife Conservation by Sustainable Use is from unfair competition from the agricultural sector, such as subsidies and lack of taxation, resulting in market distortion for wildlife utilization. This book thus gives valuable evidence for a different way of working, providing arguments for removing such distortions and thereby facilitating financially sound land use and making it a rationally sound choice to conserve wildlife outside protected areas.
