Family planning is a decision made by an individual or couples about how many children one would like to have, when to start having children, when to stop having children and how long to rest between each pregnancy(MOH,2007). A significant number of useful studies have been conducted which account for aggregate fertility trends or explain individual fertility behaviors with some degree of power. It can be firmly asserted that the weakness of fertility research to date is not one of the poor theoretical formulations but its failure to place fertility within its local socio cultural and economic context. This study is an attempt to examine the possible socio-cultural and economic factors affecting women's role in family planning decision making with specific reference to Addis Ketema Sub-City, Addis Ababa. The findings indicate that socio-cultural and economic factors interact on fertility and women's fertility behaviors is greatly influenced by the socio-cultural values attached to child bearing.

Decision making power of men/husbands on family planning (needs for his consent by women/wives), seeing children as social prestige due to cultural beliefs, low status of women in community, undermining knowledge of women, limiting responsibility of women/wives to home, dominance of men/husbands on households, etc are affecting directly or by complement with each other the family planning decision making among Married couples. Objective: To explore the influence of gender norms on family planning decision- making among married couples, in Jeldu Woreda rural Kebeles, west Shewa 2012/13. Methods: A Qualitative study with grounded theory design was employed. Data collection was done using a semi-structured interview guide with open-ended questions. The methods employed were in-depth interview and focus group discussions. Data analysis was begun with transcription. Transcripts were coded using Atlas.ti-7 Software using thematic analysis. Recommendation: HEWs, woreda women’s and children’s affairs and family planning programmers needs to consider and design activities that have more holistic approach, including and integrating elements like men’s dominance on households, the low-status women in the community, cultural beliefs related with number of children, attitudes towards gender and proverbs/sayings related with gender. BCC and IEC program targeting family planning at different levels of government FMOH, Regional health bureau and woreda health office should give consideration and attention for gender norms in the community.

The pressing need to break the silence on non-consensual sex among young people – an issue shrouded by denial, underreporting and stigma – is self-evident. Despite the growing body of research regarding young people’s sexual behaviours, the study of coercive sexual experiences has generally been overlooked by both researchers and national programmes. Available evidence has been scattered and unrepresentative and despite this evidence, non-consensual sex among young people is perceived to be a rare occurrence. This volume dispels any such misconception. It presents a disturbing picture of non-consensual sex among girls as well as boys, and among married as well as unmarried young women in a variety of settings. This volume documents, moreover, the expanse of non-consensual experiences that young people face – from unwanted touch to forced penetrative sex and gang rape. Although the focus is on young females, the volume also sheds light on the experience of young males as both victims and perpetrators. This pioneering volume highlights key factors placing young people at risk, whilst outlining the significant distinctive health and social implications they face. Sex Without Consent also documents the unsupportive – and sometimes abusive or negligent – roles of families, teachers, health care providers and law enforcement agents, outlines promising efforts intended to prevent non-consensual sex or support survivors, and argues for profound changes in norms and values that tolerate or encourage non-consensual sex. Modern contraception implemented in the health posts of the Peruvian highlands has not been readily accepted. The goal of this paper is to report on the contraceptive practices of the Quechua-speaking Indians living in a small rural community near Cuzco, Peru. The attitudes of husbands and wives toward contraception and the control of family size are analyzed in relation to their internalized values about fertility and their cultural role. Women's subordinate position in the society and vis-à-vis their husbands is reinforced by cultural taboos concerning menstruation. Men's involvement in contraception and their preference for periodic abstinence suggests both that they fear menstrual blood, and that they do not wish to lose control over their wives' sexual lives. Couples' behavior about the control of family size reveals that within the context of the society, gender identity perpetuates men's dominant role and women's subordination. Suggestions for improving the delivery of family planning services emphasize educational workshops given separately to husbands and wives. Women's economic coalition through the marketing of crafts would enhance their social position and would increase their participation in reproductive decisions.
