La diffusion de la contraception médicale, autorisée depuis 1967, a renforcé l'autonomie des femmes dans le contrôle de la reproduction. Pourtant, il apparaît qu'une partie des hommes s'inscrit de nos jours dans une logique de soutien et de partage des responsabilités contraceptives. L'objectif principal de l'étude était d'identifier les déterminants de la participation de l'homme au choix de la contraception du couple. Nous avons mené une étude épidémiologique observationnelle transversale incluant 197 couples hétérosexuels tout venant, de Décembre 2017 à Mai 2018, dont la femme était âgée de moins de 50 ans et n'était ni enceinte, ni ménopausée. Le recueil des résultats s'est fait par questionnaire anonyme Parmi les hommes interrogés, 37,6 0/0 déclaraient avoir participé au choix de la contraception de leur couple. Le fait de cohabiter avec son ou sa partenaire (p=O,047) et l'utilisation d'une méthode contraceptive impliquant la coopération de l'homme étaient associés à une plus forte participation masculine. La participation déclarée par les hommes était également plus importante chez ceux qui estimaient avoir de bonnes à très bonnes connaissances (p-0,018). Les résultats de cette étude illustrent la volonté des hommes d'un soutien et d'un partage des responsabilités contraceptives. Le médecin généraliste occupe une place privilégiée en tant qu'interlocuteur des hommes sur la sexualité et la contraception. Intégrer le couple dans la démarche contraceptive en consultation permettrait sans doute une meilleure observance et acceptation de la méthode contraceptive.

This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult. Throughout the chapters, the authors try to identify other relevant factors that influence the outcomes we discuss or that influence the impact of population growth on those outcomes.

This review of China's health sector begins by noting China's achievements in population control, health status, and nutrition. The policies, sources of financing, and resource use that have contributed to China's successes are cited, and the evolution of several influences on health from outside the sector are discussed, including nutritional improvements, greater access to clean water and sanitary waste disposal, and fertility reduction. Two major challenges now face China's health sector: (i) extending the methods that have been successful to areas where mortality rates and deaths due to infectious diseases remain high; and (ii) developing and implementing approaches to management of chronic disease that combine prevention, low-cost treatment, rehabilitation, and humane care. Major innovation will be essential because resources are limited and plans for meeting the health needs of the population are ambitious. Institutions capable of innovation, experimentation, and analysis of public health problems must be developed. The report includes discussion of specific issues in the sector.

The Male Pill is the first book to reveal the history of hormonal contraceptives for men. Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. She chronicles how the search for a male pill required significant reorganization of drug-testing standards and protocols and of the family-planning infrastructure—including founding special clinics for men, creating separate spaces for men within existing clinics, enrolling new professionals, and defining new categories of patients. The Male Pill is ultimately a story as much about the design of masculinities in the last decades of the twentieth century as it is about the development of safe and effective technologies.

Learning the details of others' sex lives is the most enticing of guilty pleasures. We measure our own practices against the normalcy that sex surveys seek to capture. Special interest groups use or attack survey findings (such as the claim that 10% of Americans are gay) for their own ends. Indeed, we all have some stake in these surveys, be it self-justification, recrimination, or curiosity--and this testifies to their significance in our culture. Kiss and Tell chronicles the history of sex surveys in the United States over a century of changing social and sexual mores. Julia Ericksen and Sally Steffen reveal that the survey questions asked, more than the answers elicited, expose and shape the popular image of appropriate sexuality. We can learn as much about the history and practice of sexuality by looking at surveyors' changing concerns as we can by reading the results of their surveys. The authors show how surveys have reflected societal anxieties about adolescent development, teen sex and promiscuity, and AIDS, and have been employed in efforts to preserve marriage and to control women's sexuality. Kiss and Tell is an important examination of the role of social science in shaping American sexual patterns. Revealing how surveys of sexual behavior help create the issues they purport merely to describe, it reminds us how malleable and imperfect our knowledge of sexual behavior is.
