Departing Tong-Shaan: The Organization and Operation of Cantonese Overseas Emigration to America (1850-1900)
Author: Douglas W. Lee, PhD
Publisher: Dorrance Publishing
ISBN: 1639374965
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 769
Book Description
Later nineteenth-century large-scale Chinese overseas emigration to America is generally well-known, where masses of poor desperate Chinese people (mostly young men) left home in Southern China to seek economic opportunities in America and elsewhere. Despite this fact, it has long been a mystery why both research specialists and interested readers alike have seldom, if ever, asked such critically important questions such as: If later nineteenth-century Chinese emigrants were so poor and desperate... then “How did they know where to go? How did they arrange to get there and back? and perhaps most importantly, How did they pay for their long journey?” This book is the fourth volume of the new series, entitled The Gum-Shaan Chronicles: The Early History of Cantonese-Chinese America, 1850-1900. It is the first scholarly work to examine “the nuts and bolts” of the complex technical process orchestrating Cantonese Chinese overseas emigration. It examines in detail the various financial, technological, logistical, demographic, geographical, political-economy, and historical constructs supporting and guiding later nineteenth-century Cantonese overseas emigration from British Hong Kong to America. About the Author Douglas W. Lee, PhD is a second-generation Cantonese-Chinese American, trained as a historian of Modern China, with a special research interest in early Chinese American History. He earned a BA at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon (1967); an MA at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1969); a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1979); and JD from Lewis and Clark Law School, Portland, Oregon (1988). In 1979-1980, Lee was the cofounder and first national President of the National Association for Asian American Studies. In 1981, he was cofounder of the Chinese Historical Society of the Pacific Northwest, and the first editor of its journal, The Annals of the Chinese Historical Society of the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Washington). This book is the result of forty-five years of research and writing.

The Oxford Handbook of Perceptual Organization
Author: Johan Wagemans
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191510475
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 1121
Book Description
Perceptual organization comprises a wide range of processes such as perceptual grouping, figure-ground organization, filling-in, completion, perceptual switching, etc. Such processes are most notable in the context of shape perception but they also play a role in texture perception, lightness perception, color perception, motion perception, depth perception, etc. Perceptual organization deals with a variety of perceptual phenomena of central interest, studied from many different perspectives, including psychophysics, experimental psychology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and computational modeling. Given its central importance in phenomenal experience, perceptual organization has also figured prominently in classic Gestalt writings on the topic, touching upon deep philosophical issues regarding mind-brain relationships and consciousness. In addition, it attracts a great deal of interest from people working in applied areas like visual art, design, architecture, music, and so forth. The Oxford Handbook of Perceptual Organization provides a broad and extensive review of the current literature, written in an accessible form for scholars and students. With chapter written by leading researchers in the field, this is the state-of-the-art reference work on this topic, and will be so for many years to come.

Consultation for Organizational Change
Author: Anthony F. Buono
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1617350885
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 335
Book Description
This volume is a joint publication in the Research in Management Consulting and Contemporary Trends in Organizational Change and Development series. This dual focus reflects the reality that consulting for organizational change is a special type of management consultation, a complex field of endeavor that requires a broad range of skills and competencies. To be truly effective, change-related consulting requires a unique client-consultant relationship, a special set of consulting skills, an expertise in human and organizational systems, and significant personal qualities. It is in high demand in a world full of change. Yet, we still know relatively little theoretically about this type of consulting and have relatively little empirical evidence about what actually works and why. As the contributors amply illustrate, the Organization Development (OD) field has a well developed set of frameworks, technologies, and models of change. Still we need to focus on and learn more about the role of the OD consultant as a special kind of change agent. A goal of this joint volume is to increase that specific body of knowledge and provide an illustration of much needed collaboration in bringing all possible resources to bear on our understanding of an increasingly critical and essential form of consulting.
