The reason the year it covers, 1775, has hitherto been omitted, is because the Second Series of Archives, starting with 1776, was begun and finished before the First Series was ended. Book Description
Excerpt from Documents Relating to the Revolutionary History of the State of New Jersey, Vol. 2: Extracts From American Newspapers The evacuation of Philadelphia and the battle of Mon mouth are detailed by Washington and Clinton, and over against all stands Charles Lee, and his hitherto forgotten letter to the New Jersey Gazette, in which, like many another military leader caught in a sorry fix, he pleads a suspension of judgment. But there is much that does not relate to matters purely military. For the first time in the history of New Jersey journalism, a woman, Belinda, contributes to Isaac Collins' newspaper. There is something familiar in the signatures and arguments of Equal T axer and A True Patriot, while other discontented citizens advise the legislature and warn those in authority. Adolphus, in verse, tells of The Future Glory of America and initialed contributors pour out political and economic essays. Book Description
Excerpt from History of American Journalism, 1917 Frederic Hudson, for many years the managing director of The New York Herald, issued in 1873 his Journalism in the United States. This book, which aimed to cover the period from 1690 to 1872, contains many interesting sketches of editors and their papers, but is so full of errors, and is so biased in its point of view, that it cannot be accepted as an authority even for the period with which Mr. Hudson was most familiar. The United States Government in 1880 issued, in connection with its publications of the census for that year, a History and Present Conditions of the Newspaper and Periodical Press of the United States. For the historical part, the book was based upon the works already mentioned and perpetuated their errors. Its statistical matter, being compiled from data furnished to the census, makes it a valuable contribution to journalism history. In 1881 Charles Dudley Warner, a member of the editorial staff of The Courant, of Hartford, Connecticut, published an essay, The American Newspaper, which he had read before the Social Science Association at Saratoga Springs, New York, on September 6 of that year. Brief as was this booklet, it was a most comprehensive summary of journalism as it then existed. Nothing else of general scope, except scattering magazine articles and biographies of individual editors, has appeared to record the developments of American journalism. The author of this book, while acknowledging his indebtedness to the works already enumerated, has sought in every instance to verify facts as original sources: in his attempt to do so he has been greatly assisted by secretaries of state historical societies to whom acknowledgment for courtesies rendered must first be made. To acknowledge in print others who have helped in the preparation of the manuscript is obviously impossible, except in a few cases. Book Description
Excerpt from Daily Newspapers in the United States The aim of this bibliography has been to list references on the writing and editing of daily newspapers which will be of most use at the present time. The business side has not been considered nor has the subject of newspaper advertising been taken up except as it has influence upon the policy of the papers. Special departments, comic supplements, illustrations, etc., have also been omitted. A few books of early date have been included to bring out the development of the subject but, for the most part, citations previous to the year 1890 have been excluded. Encyclopaedic articles have not been used, although those in the Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th edition) and the New International Encyclopaedia are very good in their discussion of many phases of journalism and its growth in this country. The bibliography has been arranged by topical headings to show the logical development of the subject. Numerous sub-heads have been used to bring out quite definitely the exact place of each article in the subject as a whole. Book Description
Excerpt from Making a Newspaper The average American, while he does not perhaps often realize it, regards the newspapers of his country much as he regards the Liberty Bell and Bunker Hill. In the Liberty Bell and Bunker Hill he sees symbols of independence and democratic government. In the newspapers he sees concrete examples of that priceless possession, free speech. Holding the newspapers thus apart from the ordinary, he is willing to overlook the fact that they are in reality pure business ventures conducted for the purpose of making money, and consider them as representing not men but principles. The American is proud of his newspapers, and while there is here and there an example which he may not defend, he is ever ready to praise them and, if need be, fight for them as a whole. There is nothing which will make the eagle shriek louder than the shadow of a muzzle for the press. Newspapers are read everywhere in America, for the editor, like the missionary and the school-teacher, is ever on the lookout for new territory; but the most persistent readers are found in the larger cities. Here a newspaper is a daily necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
