Book Description
Over the past 10 years there has been a veritable explosion of knowledge in working in this area are fortunate to meet their bile acid research. Those colleagues from time to time at International Meetings which are often held in attractive parts of the world. The 7th International Symposium on bile acids 'Bile Acids in Gastroenterology' was no exception. It took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, from 17th-20th March 1982. This meeting was organised by a Scientific Committee, with representatives from Italy, the United States and Great Britain, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Gastroenterology. The format of the meeting was somewhat different from that of previous years. In addition to the free communications (verbal and poster presentations) which characte rise many scientific meetings, there was also an Advanced Postgraduate Course on bile acids given by a distinguished international panel of experts. Their contributions form the basis for this timely volume which should be of interest both to basic scientists and to clinical investigators alike. The editors are indebted to Dr Gian Germano Giuliani, Gipharmex SpA, Milano, whose generous support made the meeting possible. They also thank Mr P. M. Lister, Managing Editor, MTP Press Limited and Mrs Veronica Cesari, Italian Society of Gastroenterology for help with the publication of these proceedings. R. Book Description
A shotgun misfires inside the American Fur Company store in Northern Michigan, and Alexis St. Martin's death appears imminent. It's 1822, and, as the leaders of Mackinac Island examine St. Martin's shot-riddled torso, they decide not to incur a single expense on behalf of the indentured fur trapper. They even go so far as to dismiss the attention of U.S. Army Assistant Surgeon William Beaumont, the frontier fort's only doctor. Beaumont ignores the orders and saves the young man's life. What neither the doctor nor his patient understands—yet—is that even as Beaumont's care of St. Martin continues for decades, the motives and merits of his attention are far from clear. In fact, for what he does to his patient, Beaumont will eventually stand trial and be judged. Rooted deeply in historic fact, Open Wound artfully fictionalizes the complex, lifelong relationship between Beaumont and his illiterate French Canadian patient. The young trapper's injury never completely heals, leaving a hole into his stomach that the curious doctor uses as a window to understand the mysteries of digestion. Eager to rise up from his humble origins and self-conscious that his medical training occurred as an apprentice to a rural physician rather than at an elite university, Beaumont seizes the opportunity to experiment upon his patient's stomach in order to write a book that he hopes will establish his legitimacy and secure his prosperity. As Jason Karlawish portrays him, Beaumont, always growing hungrier for more wealth and more prestige, personifies the best and worst aspects of American ambition and power.

Book Description
Excerpt from Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and the Physiology of Digestion The reasons which have induced me to reprint the present work from the American original, are, 1st, A strong sense of its inherent importance and of the numerous applications which may be made of the facts and principles developed in it to the prevention and cure of disease; 2dly, Its comparative inaccessibility to the European physiologist from the difficulty which still exists of procuring it on this side of the Atlantic; and, lastly, An earnest desire that the author should obtain that credit which is unquestionably due to his disinterested and indefatigable labours. The value of Dr Beaumont's experiments consists partly in the admirable opportunities for observation which he enjoyed, and partly in the candid and truth-seeking spirit in which all his inquiries seem to have been conducted.
