Book Description
A new dual fuel Controlled Auto-Ignition (CA!) combustion concept was proposed and researched for lower exhaust emissions and better fuel economy. The concept takes the advantage of the complementary physical and chemical properties of high octane number gasoline and high cetane number Di-Methyl Ether (DME) to organize the combustion process. Homogeneous gasoline/air mixture is utilized as the main combustible charge, which is realised by a low-cost Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. Pressurised DME is directly injected into cylinder via a commercial Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) injector. Flexible DME injection strategies are employed to realise the controlled auto ignition of the premixed charge. The engine is operated at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) in the entire operating region in order to minimize the intake pumping loss. Engine load is controlled by varying the amount of internal Exhaust Gas Recirculation (iEGR) which is achieved and adjusted by Positive Valve Overlap (PVO) and/or exhaust back pressure, and exhaust re- breathing method. The premixed mixture can be of either stoichiometric air/fuel ratio or fuel lean mixture and is heated and diluted by recycled exhaust gases. The use of internal EGR is considered as a very effective method to initiate CAI combustion due to its heating effect and moderation of the heat release rate by its dilution effect. In addition, the new combustion concept is compared to conventional SI combustion. The results indicate that the new combustion concept has potential for high efficiency, low emissions, enlargement of the engine operational region and flexible control of CAI combustion.

Book Description
Diesel-ignited gasoline and diesel-ignited methane dual fuel combustion experiments were performed in a single-cylinder research engine (SCRE), outfitted with a common-rail diesel injection system and a stand-alone engine controller. Gasoline was injected in the intake port using a port-fuel injector, whereas methane was fumigated into the intake manifold. The engine was operated at a constant speed of 1500 rev/min, a constant load of 5.2 bar IMEP, and a constant gasoline/methane energy substitution of 80%. Parameters such as diesel injection timing (SOI), diesel injection pressure, and boost pressure were varied to quantify their impact on engine performance and engineout ISNOx, ISHC, ISCO, and smoke emissions. The change in combustion process from heterogeneous combustion to HCCI like combustion was also observed.

Book Description
Technischer Bericht aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Energiewissenschaften, , Veranstaltung: Erneuerbare Treibstoffe, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: DME known as dimethyl ether, is a well known chemical substance, the simplest ether, with the chemical structure CH3-O-CH3, consisting of one oxygen atom, two carbon atoms, and six hydrogen atoms. If we us Dimethyl ether as fuel, we recognize, that this fuel brings in one oxygen atom and has six hydrogen atoms. If we compare with methanol (CH3-OH), which has only four hydrogen atoms, dimethyl ether as simplest ether can also be seen as hydrogen carrier. The thermodynamic properties of Dimethyl ether, show that dimethyl ether is liquid at room temperature T=25°C and a pressure of p=6 bar. It is well known that dimethyl ether can be used as an substitute of fossil Diesel fuel, as a synthetic formed Diesel substitute, with highly advanced combustion properties and very low emissions in carbon monoxide(CO), dust and soot and nitrogen oxide(NO2). It easy to handle with the well known LPG (liquid propane gas) technology and can be easily and cheap implemented into heavy Diesel engines. The application of dimethyl ether is wide: transportation, agriculture, civil and rural hotel sector.
