This collection of essays by ten leading British and French Renaissance specialists explores, for the first time, differing conceptions of Europe in Renaissance France. Four essays concentrate on problems of definition in ideological, chronological, geographical and linguistic terms, concentrating on the relationship between Christendom and Europe, Antiquity and its Renaissance heirs, and Latin and the vernacular languages of south-western France. A further three essays address cultural exchange and political collaboration (and, inevitably, conflict) between France and England at the time of the Wars of Religion,exploring Catholic and Protestant reactions to the battle of Lepanto, Anglo-French Protestant espionage and pragmatic conceptions of the state based on geography rather than religion. The final three contributions focus on the construction of a European identity in the early modern period that defines itself in contrast to a significant other, be it Islamic or ‘Atlantic’, with particular reference to the presentation of Turkish characters in the work of Christian writers, exotic travel in the work of François Rabelais and the genre of the Livre des contrariétés. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students of French Renaissance literature and to those interested in the prehistory of our contemporary conception of Europe.

A consensus seems to exist on the following. In foreign language acquisition methodology sound methods and efficient tools have been developed until now in order to allow the learner to master and put into practice grammar, basic vocabulary and frequent communicative rules. Within this area Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become an indispensable partner, often leading the game. Beyond these borders, however, methodology as a whole becomes more blurred. Rules seem to vanish, variation and specialisation increase. Intuitive and ad hoc approaches seem to take the lead on formally established methods. The reasons for this are obvious: how to control the enormous, ever changing and expanding set of data, links and encyclopedic information that we associate with a richly developed human language? In front of this overwhelming opponent the search for method often surrenders. This is the point where CALL could offer foreign language learning the opportunity to make another jump forward. Information technology is capable of handling and streamlining huge and complex amounts of information. But this is also the point where language crosses the border of the purely linguistic fact, and where language learning has to come to terms with what we would call "cultural" issues.

The choice of the 20 poems corresponds to Donovan's The Breton Lay, the only synthesis so far available on this topic in English. Leaving Parnassus: The Lyric Subject in Verlaine and Rimbaud considers how the crisis of the lyric subject in the middle of the nineteenth century in France is a direct response to the aesthetic principles of Parnassian poetry, which dominated the second half of the century much more than critics often think. The poets considered here rebel against the strict confines of traditional and contemporary poetry and attempt to create radically new discursive practices. Specifically, the close readings of poems apply recent studies of subjectivity in poetry and focus on the works of Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud to see how each subverts the dominant tradition of French poetry in a unique way. Whereas previous studies considered isolated aspects of each poet's lyric subject, Leaving Parnassus shows that the situation of the lyric is a source of subversion throughout the poets' entire work, and as such it is crucial to our full understanding of their respective innovations.

The apparent self-sufficiency of joie de vivre means that, despite the widespread use of the phrase since the late nineteenth century, the concept has rarely been explored critically. Joie de vivre does not readily surrender itself to examination, for it is in a sense too busy being what it is.
