Book Description
This volume is the second in "The Downstate Series of Research in Psychiatry." It is aseries devoted to the presentation of sig nificant research with relevance for both clinicians and researchers in the multiple subfields of psychiatry. This book focuses on the interactions between psychic phenomena and physical processes as studied by evoked brain potentials. It presents material concerned with physiological and psychological unifying processes, as weIl as research concerning technology and methods of obtaining meaningful measurements. As such it is representative of biological psychiatry at its best. Thus, it represents another step in new directions in psychiatric research but not an unanticipated direction. Scientific investigation into the human psyche took an unex pected turn when Sigmund Freud in the last part of the 19th Century turned his attention from neurological concerns to those of psychol ogy. His first attempts at explanations as noted in the "project," included a heavy emphasis on the biological substrate of behavior.

Book Description
Brain-Body-Mind in the Nebulous Cartesian System: A Holistic Approach by Oscillations is a research monograph, with didactical features, on the mechanisms of the mind, encompassing a wide spectrum of results and analyses. The book should appeal to scientists and graduate students in the fields of neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry, physiology, psychology, physics and philosophy. Its goals are the development of an empirical-analytical construct, denoted as “Reasonings to Approach the Mind”, and the comprehension of 20 principles for understanding the mind. This book amalgamates results from work on the brain, vegetative system, brains in the evolution of species, the maturing brain, dynamic memory, emotional processes, and cognitive impairment in neuro-psychiatric disorders (Alzheimer, Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorders). The findings are comparatively evaluated within the framework of brain oscillations and neurotransmitters. Further, a holistic approach links the brain to the cardiovascular system and overall myogenic coordination of the vegetative system. The results emphasize that EEG oscillations, ultraslow oscillations, and neurotransmitters are quasi-invariant building blocks in brain-body-mind function and also during the evolution of species: The temporal domain is where the importance of research on neural oscillators is indispensable. The core, holistic concept that emerges is that the brain, spinal cord, overall myogenic system, brain-body-oscillations, and neurotransmitters form a functional syncytium. Accordingly, the concept of “Syncytium Brain-Body-Mind” replaces the concept of “Mind”. P>

Book Description
Memory itself is inseparable from all other brain functions and involves distributed dynamic neural processes. A wealth of publications in neuroscience literature report that the concerted action of distributed multiple oscillatory processes (EEG oscillations) play a major role in brain functioning. The analysis of function-related brain oscillatio

Book Description
The Responsive Brain covers the proceedings of the Third International Congress on Event-related Slow Potentials of the Brain, held in Bristol, England on August 13-18, 1973. The book focuses on various actions of the brain, including responses to stimuli, language production, and cortical responses. The selection first offers information on the topography of evoked potential amplitude fluctuations; thoughts on measurement of 'the' contingent negative variation (CNV); and implications of cross-modality stimulus permutations for the CNV. The book also touches on the distribution of response to non-signal stimuli; cortical responses evoked by thermal stimuli in man; and pattern discrimination in the spatial distribution of the contingent negative variation. The publication ponders on brain slow potential changes and motor response in a vigilance situation; CNV and post-response negativity with stressful auditory feedback; and CNV-heart rate response under gradual sleep reduction. The text also elaborates on the evaluation of event-related slow potentials in selected groups of psychiatric patients; event-related slow potentials in mental retardates; and electroencephalographic localization of conative aspects of language production in the human brain. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in event-related slow potentials of the brain.
