Book Description
Decentralization of energy generation in power distribution systems is a key strategy to incorporate more small-scale renewable sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase energy efficiency. Beside the integration of more decentralized generation, an efficient grid operation is equally important to achieve an overall sustainable energy system. Thus, accurate determination of energy losses in distribution systems is a fundamental task. In this thesis, a novel evaluation framework for grid losses is developed. First, a loss evaluation approach based on comprehensive assessment of grid features and the reference grid modeling scheme is proposed. Second, a novel analytical indicator is introduced for fast estimation of the grid losses considering the installed distributed generators. For grid operators, this new evaluation framework is a practical and technically validated tool. Applying this evaluation framework for energy losses can support grid operators to understand the origin and development trends of losses at very large scales. The proposed evaluation approaches of energy losses can greatly contribute to improve energy efficiency and sustainability of distribution systems.

Book Description
This interim report provides documentation on the third task, Analysis of Individual Component Cost and/or Energy Efficiencies, of DOE Contract No. ET-78-C-01-2866, Evaluation of Higher Distribution and/or Utilization Voltages. The work performed under this task includes the development of both cost and energy loss models for the distribution and customer utilization system elements as well as the analysis of critical performance variables for the types of motors in end use elements, as a function of voltage level. The purpose of this task is to provide individual component cost and energy models which will be incorporated in the global system optimization program under Task 4. A major output of this task is a mathematical model for each component's cost and/or energy losses and a graphical representation of each model.

Book Description
Efficient use of electrical energy includes all the technical and non-technical measures to reduce the electrical energy demand of an electrical distribution system. In the present research an assessment and minimization of technical energy loss in power distribution system of Messebo building production factory is carried out in detail with the help of simulation using ETAP5.0 software. The simulation result obtained shows that the maximum power loss of feeder cables, distribution transformers and power transformers and based on this simulation result the overall technical energy loss was assessed and compared to the standard energy loss in electrical power systems according to IEC2007, which is 3-5%.

Book Description
The analysis of actual distribution systems with penetration of distributed generation requires powerful tools with capabilities that until very recently were not available in distribution software tools; for instance, probabilistic and time mode simulations. This chapter presents the application of parallel computing to the allocation of distributed generation for maximum reduction of energy losses in distribution system when the system is evaluated during a given period (e.g., the target is to minimize energy losses for periods equal or longer than 1 year). The simulations have been carried out using OpenDSS, a freely available software tool for distribution system studies, when it is driven as a COM DLL from MATLAB using a multicore installation. The chapter details a MATLAB-OpenDSS procedure for allocation of photovoltaic (PV) generation in distribution systems using a parallel Monte Carlo approach and assuming that loads are voltage-dependent. The main goals are to check the viability of a Monte Carlo method in some studies for which parallel computing can be advantageously applied and propose a simple procedure for minimization of energy losses in distribution systems.

Book Description
A comprehensive review of the theory and practice for designing, operating, and optimizing electric distribution systems, revised and updated Now in its second edition, Electric Distribution Systems has been revised and updated and continues to provide a two-tiered approach for designing, installing, and managing effective and efficient electric distribution systems. With an emphasis on both the practical and theoretical approaches, the text is a guide to the underlying theory and concepts and provides a resource for applying that knowledge to problem solving. The authors—noted experts in the field—explain the analytical tools and techniques essential for designing and operating electric distribution systems. In addition, the authors reinforce the theories and practical information presented with real-world examples as well as hundreds of clear illustrations and photos. This essential resource contains the information needed to design electric distribution systems that meet the requirements of specific loads, cities, and zones. The authors also show how to recognize and quickly respond to problems that may occur during system operations, as well as revealing how to improve the performance of electric distribution systems with effective system automation and monitoring. This updated edition: • Contains new information about recent developments in the field particularly in regard to renewable energy generation • Clarifies the perspective of various aspects relating to protection schemes and accompanying equipment • Includes illustrative descriptions of a variety of distributed energy sources and their integration with distribution systems • Explains the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, various types of energy storage systems and the role they play to improve power quality, stability, and reliability Written for engineers in electric utilities, regulators, and consultants working with electric distribution systems planning and projects, the second edition of Electric Distribution Systems offers an updated text to both the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of electrical distribution systems.
