Book Description
A radiographic paper system has been evaluated with and without ultraviolet fluorescent screens over an X-ray energy range from 25 KVCP to 160 KVCP in order to determine its potential for supplementing X-ray film at a cost savings. Part I of this report gave the technique curves for 2024 aluminum from 25 KVCP to 150 KVCP without screens and with Kodak Industrex Intensifying Screen F-1. Detail sensitivity obtained with penetrameters was reported at 2% for this screen over part of this energy range for selected thicknesses of aluminum. Comparison of film and paper radiography was made using two different types of fluorescent screens with aluminum and titanium honeycomb samples. Part II gives the technique curves for 2024 aluminum from 25 KVCP to 160 KVCP with Kodak Industrex Intensifying Screen F-2. Detail sensitivity using penetrameters is reported for selected aluminum thicknesses over this energy range, together with the sensitometric properties such as the characteristic curve, gradient, exposure latitude, and speed of exposure.

Book Description
Ultraviolet fluorescent screens are being evaluated as part of a radiographic paper system over an X-ray energy range from 25KVCP to 300KVCP in order to determine its potential for replacing X-ray film at a cost savings in certain applications. The report gives the technique curves obtained for 2024 aluminum from 25KVCP to 150KVCP without screens and with Kodak Industrex Intensifying Screen F-1. Detail sensitivity obtained with penetrameters is reported with this screen for selected thicknesses of aluminum over this energy range. A COMPARISON IS MADE OF FILM RADIOGRAPHY AND PAPER RADIOGRAPHY USING TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLUORESCENT SCREENS WITH TITANIUM AND ALUMINUM HONEYCOMB SAMPLES. These samples illustrate varying degrees of foam adhesive used to bond the honeycomb to the spar or end closure, water entrapped in the cells, deformed and crushed core. Another application of paper radiography is inspecting wax molds used for making investment cast turbine blades for cracks and porosity. Work to date has demonstrated that the paper, F-1 screen combination is capable of 2% sensitivity over an energy range from 50KVCP to 150KVCP through aluminum. With a speed over 10 times that of Class II film and 10 second processing, the system not only saves time, but offers the potential for saving as much as two thirds over film costs. It is recommended that the Air Force consider this system for radiography of non-critical structural and engine components. (Author, modified-PL).
