Book Description
The NASA SCI Files is an Emmy award-winning series of instructional programs for grades 3-5. Produced by the NASA Center for Distance Learning, programs in the series are research-, inquiry-, standards-, teacher- and technology-based. Each NASA SCI Files program (1) integrates mathematics, science, and technology; (2) uses Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to enhance and enrich the teaching and learning of science; (3) emphasizes science as inquiry and the scientific method; (4) motivates students to become critical thinkers and active problem solvers; and (5) uses NASA research, facilities, and personnel to raise student awareness of careers and to exhibit the "real-world" application of mathematics, science, and technology. In April 2004, 1,500 randomly selected registered users of the NASA SCI Files were invited to complete a survey containing a series of questions. A total of 263 surveys were received. This report contains the quantitative and qualitative results of that survey.Caton, Randall H. and Ricles, Shannon S. and Pinelli, Thomas E. and Legg, Amy C. and Lambert, Matthew A.Langley Research CenterNASA PROGRAMS; EDUCATION; TELECOMMUNICATION; SCIENCE; ENGINEERING; MATHEMATICS; STUDENTS; VIDEO CONFERENCING; RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT; EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION; EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Book Description
NASA 'Why?' Files, a research and standards-based, Emmy-award winning series of 60-minute instructional programs for grades 3-5, introduces students to NASA; integrates mathematics, science, and technology by using Problem-Based Learning (PBL), scientific inquiry, and the scientific method; and motivates students to become critical thinkers and active problem solvers. All four 2000-2001 NASA 'Why?' Files programs include an instructional broadcast, a lesson guide, an interactive web site, plus numerous instructional resources. In March 2001, 1,000 randomly selected program registrants participated in a survey. Of these surveys, 185 (154 usable) met the established cut-off date. Respondents reported that (1) they used the four programs in the 2000-2001 NASA 'Why?' Files series; (2) series goals and objectives were met; (3) programs met national mathematics, science, and technology standards; (4) program content was developmentally appropriate for grade level; and (5) programs enhanced/enriched the teaching of mathematics, science, and technology.Pinelli, Thomas E. and Frank, Kari Lou and Ashcroft, Scott B. and Williams, Amy C.Langley Research CenterEDUCATION; SURVEYS; SCHOOLS; INSTRUCTORS; STUDENTS; TECHNOLOGIES; MATHEMATICS; SCIENCE

Book Description
Over the past 50 years, thousands of satellites have been sent into space on missions to collect data about the Earth. Today, the ability to forecast weather, climate, and natural hazards depends critically on these satellite-based observations. At the request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Research Council convened a committee to examine the scientific accomplishments that have resulted from space-based observations. This book describes how the ability to view the entire globe at once, uniquely available from satellite observations, has revolutionized Earth studies and ushered in a new era of multidisciplinary Earth sciences. In particular, the ability to gather satellite images frequently enough to create "movies" of the changing planet is improving the understanding of Earth's dynamic processes and helping society to manage limited resources and environmental challenges. The book concludes that continued Earth observations from space will be required to address scientific and societal challenges of the future.

Book Description
The unique focus of this text integrates a constructivist/emergent literacy perspective with "science-based" instructional practices that have proved successful in supporting children's reading, writing, and speaking development. "Teaching Language and Literacy: Preschool Through the Elementary Grades "begins with a brief overview of the recent key national policies and initiatives that have had a significant impact on the teaching of reading and writing at the preschool level. Renowned and respected authors, Christie, Enz, and Vukelich, describe a continuum of approaches to reading instruction, ranging from emergent literacy to Scientifically-Based Reading Research. They also present their vision of a "blended" approach to teaching literacy that includes the best elements of these diverging views as well as a set of principles to guide the effective teaching of literacy in preschool and elementary classrooms. New to this Edition NEW! Increased coverage on oral language with a new section on preschool and kindergarten vocabulary instruction and a new chapter on teaching vocabulary at the elementary grade levels help students learn many new strategies for building children's knowledge of word meanings--a key foundation for reading comprehension. NEW! Special features at the end of most chapters discuss strategies for adapting instruction for ELL students, approaches for teaching literacy to children with special needs, and tips on promoting family literacy. NEW! Increased emphasis on direct teaching of phonics, fluency, and comprehension strategies prepares students for the heavy emphasis that these skills receive in the elementary grades. NEW! In-depth coverage of new federal and state literacy initiatives and expanded coverage of standardized literacy assessments prepares teachers for the new emphasis on skills and testing in today's schools.
