To improve current understanding of how genetically improved stocks are spatially and temporally deployed, tree breeders, gene resource managers, and forestry research community can gain insights from an analysis of currently available geospatial data. This analysis can also help and provide the raw material for better understanding of the relationship between gene resource management (GRM) and issues related to climate change and other risks such as the current mountain pine beetle epidemic. GIS links the latest information management concepts and methods to assist GRM achieve higher genetic gain, resilience and conservation goals. According to the Chief Forester's standards for seed use and the target of the Forest Genetics Council of BC, 75% of seed use will be from selected seed sources. This research developed a GIS based method to monitor and assess the spatial temporal variability of seed deployment in one seed planning zone of interior spruce and employed map representations to visualize the spatial cluster dynamics of reforestation plantations in BC. The investigation of deployment areas and stem number of seed stock inform our knowledge of forest recovery in the context of gene resources management. Class A and B seed use increased dramatically after 1995 in the Prince George Seed Production Zone (SPZ). The A class ratio in PG total seed deployment is 48.1% from 1995 to 2004 with seed orchard 214 being the leading seed source for Sx reforestation in PG at the SPU level. The Sub-boreal spruce zone is the main natural habitat area of Sx, where intensive forest management activity undergoes as the plantation hotspots. Observed changes in genetic class indicate the intensive reforestation with selected seed sources. The applicability of GIS modeling methods is available at different SPZ levels and species scopes. The system construction of an updated GRM criteria and decision making support is noteworthy for BC foresters to more wisely harvest, recover, and m.

This thesis investigates genetic variation of two commercially important conifers in western Canada, interior spruce and lodgepole pine. The goals were to quantify genetic diversity and geographic structure, to describe multitrait adaptation to local climates, and to use this information for the development of seed zones for Alberta and British Columbia. The study is based on common garden experiments in growth chambers simulating multiple environments. Genetic differences in phenology, frost hardiness and seedling growth were assessed for approximately 250 seed sources. The results show that 85% of the trait variation was found within populations of both species, while only 15-20% of the among-population variation (or 2-3% of the total variation) could be interpreted as multitrait adaptations to different macroclimatic regions. A key finding of this study is a remarkable degree of genetic diversity in climate-related adaptive traits, implying enough evolutionary capacity to adapt to new environmental conditions. Our results indicate that the current seed zones system can be simplified, especially in Alberta. No more than 20 seedzones for each, lodgepole pine and interior spruce, are required to guide reforestation across Alberta and British Columbia, substantially reducing logistics for seed management.

Interior spruce (the white spruce/Engelmann spruce complex) is the most commonly planted tree in British Columbia and has the greatest value to the forest economy of the province. The Ministry of Forests initiated an ambitious breeding program for interior spruce in the late 1960s aimed at producing sufficient quantities of genetically improved seeds to meet demand for forest regeneration. The program started with designating three selection units across the complex, based mostly on biogeoclimatic information. In each unit, desirable phenotypes were selected and their genetic merit was tested in open pollinated progeny trials. This report summarizes 20-year test results on the performance & variability of the selected open-pollinated families in the East Kootenay selection unit. Results are presented regarding height growth, survival rates, diameter, stem volume, and variations in parameters among specific sites in the unit.

It has become apparent, during discussions with students and colleagues in forest genetics, that a universal concern is the achievement of diverse goals of forestry from fiber production in industrial as well as farm forests to conserving forest ecosystems. Although we generally have several breeding methods available and several species to breed, we seek to satisfy multiple-use goals on diverse sites by management techniques that at best can only partially control edaphic environmental variation. The dominant approach, which was agriculturally motivated, has involved inten sive effort with complicated breeding plans on single species for uniform adaptability and single-product plantations. However, this is obviously neither the only, nor necessarily the best, solution for the genetic management of tree species, and thus our intent in this volume is to develop ways to achieve multiple objectives in tree breeding. We include an array of breeding plans from simple iterated designs to sets of multiple populations capable of using gene actions for different traits in different environments for uncertain futures. The presentation is organized around the development of breeding from single-to multiple-option plans, from single to multiple traits, from single to mUltiple environ ments, and from single to multiple populations. However, it is not a complete "How To" book, and includes neither exercises nor instructions on data handling. It also does not include discussion of all modes of reproduction and inheritance encountered in plants.
