Book Description

Book Description
The objective of this self-contained book is two-fold. First, the reader is introduced to the modelling and mathematical analysis used in fluid mechanics, especially concerning the Navier-Stokes equations which is the basic model for the flow of incompressible viscous fluids. Authors introduce mathematical tools so that the reader is able to use them for studying many other kinds of partial differential equations, in particular nonlinear evolution problems. The background needed are basic results in calculus, integration, and functional analysis. Some sections certainly contain more advanced topics than others. Nevertheless, the authors’ aim is that graduate or PhD students, as well as researchers who are not specialized in nonlinear analysis or in mathematical fluid mechanics, can find a detailed introduction to this subject. .

Book Description
This comprehensive text focuses on mathematical and numerical techniques for the simulation of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena, with an emphasis laid on the magnetohydrodynamics of liquid metals, and on a prototypical industrial application. Aimed at research mathematicians, engineers, and physicists, as well as those working in industry, and starting from a good understanding of the physics at play, the approach is a highly mathematical one, based on the rigorous analysis of the equations at hand, and a solid numerical analysis to found the simulations. At each stage of the exposition, examples of numerical simulations are provided, first on academic test cases to illustrate the approach, next on benchmarks well documented in the professional literature, and finally, whenever possible, on real industrial cases.

Book Description
Modeling of Microscale Transport in Biological Processes provides a compendium of recent advances in theoretical and computational modeling of biotransport phenomena at the microscale. The simulation strategies presented range from molecular to continuum models and consider both numerical and exact solution method approaches to coupled systems of equations. The biological processes covered in this book include digestion, molecular transport, microbial swimming, cilia mediated flow, microscale heat transfer, micro-vascular flow, vesicle dynamics, transport through bio-films and bio-membranes, and microscale growth dynamics. The book is written for an advanced academic research audience in the fields of engineering (encompassing biomedical, chemical, biological, mechanical, and electrical), biology and mathematics. Although written for, and by, expert researchers, each chapter provides a strong introductory section to ensure accessibility to readers at all levels. - Features recent developments in theoretical and computational modeling for clinical researchers and engineers - Furthers researcher understanding of fluid flow in biological media and focuses on biofluidics at the microscale - Includes chapters expertly authored by internationally recognized authorities in the fundamental and applied fields that are associated with microscale transport in living media

Book Description
In this book the author presents the dynamical systems in infinite dimension, especially those generated by dissipative partial differential equations. This book attempts a systematic study of infinite dimensional dynamical systems generated by dissipative evolution partial differential equations arising in mechanics and physics and in other areas of sciences and technology. This second edition has been updated and extended.

Book Description
Understanding vortex dynamics is the key to understanding much of fluid dynamics. For this reason, many researchers, using a great variety of different approaches--analytical, computational, and experimental--have studied the dynamics of vorticity. The AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar on Vortex Dynamics and Vortex Methods, held in June 1990 at the University of Washington in Seattle, brought together experts with a broad range of viewpoints and areas of specialization. This volume contains the proceedings from that seminar. The focus here is on the numerical computation of high Reynolds number incompressible flows. Also included is a smaller selection of important experimental results and analytic treatments. Many of the articles contain valuable introductory and survey material as well as open problems. Readers will appreciate this volume for its coverage of a wide variety of numerical, analytical, and experimental tools and for its treatment of interesting important discoveries made with these tools.

Book Description
Factorization Method for Boundary Value Problems by Invariant Embedding presents a new theory for linear elliptic boundary value problems. The authors provide a transformation of the problem in two initial value problems that are uncoupled, enabling you to solve these successively. This method appears similar to the Gauss block factorization of the matrix, obtained in finite dimension after discretization of the problem. This proposed method is comparable to the computation of optimal feedbacks for linear quadratic control problems. - Develops the invariant embedding technique for boundary value problems - Makes a link between control theory, boundary value problems and the Gauss factorization - Presents a new theory for successively solving linear elliptic boundary value problems - Includes a transformation in two initial value problems that are uncoupled
