Nous avons proposé à 55 patients Alzheimer et 19 sujets contrôles âgés d'évaluer la valence affective de 48 mots selon une échelle allant de -3 (très négatif) à 3 (très positif). Les sujets ont été recrutés en institution et à domicile. La liste comprenait des mots positifs, négatifs et neutres, ainsi que 12 mots sémantiquement liés au milieu de l'institution. Les patients Alzheimer ont présenté des résultats relativement similaires à ceux des sujets contrôles. Par ailleurs, nous n'avons pu mettre en évidence un effet du lieu de vie sur le jugement des mots liés à l'institution. Enfin, dans les 2 groupes, de nombreux mots neutres ont été jugés positifs

Objectif : L'objectif de cette étude est de comparer le jugement de la valence et de l'intensité émotionnelles des mots et des odeurs dans la maladie d'Alzheimer, afin de déterminer laquelle de ces deux modalités favorise l'accès à l'expérience émotionnelle la plus intense dans sa dimension hédonique. Méthode : Nous avons présenté des mots et des odeurs à 20 patients atteints de cette pathologie et à 10 individus âgés sains. Nous leur avons demandé d'en évaluer les caractéristiques émotionnelles à l'aide d'une échelle ordinale bipolaire relative en 7 points. Au préalable, nous nous sommes assurées que le jugement des caractéristiques émotionnelles des mots et des odeurs est préservé dans la maladie d'Alzheimer. Puis nous avons pu comparer la valence et l'intensité émotionnelles attribuées aux mots et aux odeurs par les sujets atteints de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Résultats : Les résultats statistiques de cette étude montrent que les sujets atteints de la maladie d'Alzheimer jugent la valence émotionnelle des mots et des odeurs de façon comparable, tandis que l'intensité des émotions suscitées par les mots demeure supérieure à l'intensité des émotions suscitées par les odeurs. Conclusion : L'analyse statistique ne permet pas de valider l'hypothèse posée. Cependant, l'analyse qualitative de données objectivées par l'étude nous encourage à poursuivre l'exploration du rôle de la valence émotionnelle des odeurs comme outil dans la prise en soins de la maladie d'Alzheimer.

La maladie d'Alzheimer (MA) est la première cause de démence chez les personnes âgées. Elle se caractérise par des troubles cognitifs et comportementaux, notamment des troubles lexico-sérnantiques pouvant être sélectifs à une catégorie. Mais qu'en est-il pour les mots à valence émotionnelle? Les principales études ayant été effectuées sur les émotions dans la MA concernent la reconnaissance faciale des émotions, ne prenant en compte que l'aspect visuel. A ce jour, le traitement sémantique des noms émotionnels chez le patient Alzheimer n'a pas été étudié.Notre protocole consiste à présenter des séquences de films à valence émotionnelle et neutre, mettant en jeu la modalité auditive et la modalité visuelle. Les émotions que nous avons choisi d'étudier sont les émotions primaires, à savoir: la joie, la peur, la tristesse, la colère, le dégoût et la surprise. A la suite de ces séquences, le patient doit dénommer ou désigner, le cas échéant, l'émotion correspondante, et en donner des synonymes. D'autre part, la perception et le ressenti ont été évalués de manière subjective. Cette recherche a été réalisée sur une population de sujets sains, de sujets MCI, et de sujets Alzheimer. Cette étude a révélé un manque du mot des émotions à un stade précoce et ce, avant même la phase dite de démence. On a pu observer que la joie et la peur qui sont des émotions primitives, ont été dénommées avec facilité quel que soit le stade. En revanche, le dégoût et !a surprise seraient les émotions les moins bien dénommées du fait de leur aspect plus intellectuel. En ce qui concerne la fluence émotionnelle les résultats sont significatifs et montre bien qu'au plus le patient est à un stade avancé de la MA au moins il est capable de produire des synonymes.
