The findings of the study supported Jones' model (1991) that the three stages of the ethical decision making would predict each other. However, the moral intensity constructs did not assist in explaining the highly unethical scenario and provided marginal assistance in the less unethical scenario. Social consensus and magnitude of consequences explained why coaches indicated they would not behave in an unethical manner. Thus the more society condemns an action and the more serious the consequences, the more likely a coach will behave ethically. No significant differences were found among coaches by gender, division, or type of team coached. The lack of full support for the moral intensity constructs stresses the need for future research to examine what factors influences a coaches recognition, judgment, and behavioral intentions in an unethical situation. The data also suggests college athletic directors may need to examine the effectiveness of penalties for unethical behavior, as well as determine methods to reinforce ethical behavior by coaches.
