RESUMEN: La visibilidad y difusión son factores determinantes para compartir el conocimiento. El Acceso Abierto se apoya fuertemente en los Repositorios Institucionales (RI) para, entre otras cosas, recuperar y acceder a la literatura académica y científica de forma libre y gratuita. Los RI utilizan tecnologías web, por lo tanto es necesario contemplar términos, metodologías y herramientas relacionadas. Un papel fundamental en este proceso es la catalogación y clasificación de los contenidos apegados a estándares, normas, lineamientos, etc. para obtener metadatos de calidad que a su vez puedan ser recuperados por buscadores comunes y sistemas que manejen protocolos interoperables. La Experiencia de Usuario, por lo tanto, es un factor importante para consolidar los servicios e información que se ofrecen a través de elementos como utilidad, facilidad de uso y atracción. Considerando lo anterior, la selección de recursos a incluir en el RI se vuelve un punto crucial. Es así que estos deben contener ciertos elementos que permitan una buena catalogación, para una óptima cosecha por parte de otros repositorios. Las revistas arbitradas de instituciones públicas son un caso muy concreto y con buenas posibilidades de cumplir con los puntos anteriores; en el caso de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM y su Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación, DGTIC, la Revista Digital Universitaria, RDU, fue el elemento principal para aplicar buenas prácticas dentro de la implementación del repositorio institucional de la DGTIC. The open access initiative relies heavily on institutional repositories (IR) for, among other things, retrieve and access academic and scientific literature. The RI uses web technologies, therefore it is necessary to contemplate terms, methodologies and related tools. A fundamental part in this process is the classification and cataloguing of contents attached to standards, norms guidelines, etc. To obtain quality metadata which, in turn can be retrieved by common search engines and systems that can work with interoperable protocols. Therefore, the user experience becomes an important factor to consolidate the services and information that are offered through elements such as utility, usability and attraction. Considering the above, the selection of resources to be included in the RI becomes a crucial point. So that these contents must have certain elements that allows a proper cataloging so to be harvested from other repositories. Arbitrated journals from public institutions are a concrete example of a content that has all of these attributes; the case of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM and their Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación, DGTIC, the Revista Digital Universitaria, RDU, was the main element to implement good practices within the implementation of the institutional repository of the DGTIC. Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

On a mountainside in sunny Tuscany, in October 1989, 96 people from 23 countries on five continents gathered to learn and teach about the problems of managing contemporary science. The diversity of economic and political systems represented in the group was matched by our occupations, which stretched from science policy practitioners, through research scientists and engineers, through academic observers of science and science policy. It was this diversity, along with the opportunities for infonnal discussion provided by long meals and remote location, that made the conference a special learning experience. Except at lecture time, it was impossible to distinguish the "students" at this event from the "teachers," and even the most senior members of the teaching staff went away with a sense that they had learned more from this group than from many a standard conference on science policy they had attended. The flavor of the conference experience cannot be captured adequately in a proceedings volume, and so we have not tried to create a historical record in this book. Instead, we have attempted to illustrate the core problems the panicipants at the conference shared, discussed, and debated, using both lectures delivered by the fonnal teaching staff and summaries of panel discussions, which extended to other panicipants and therefore increased the range of experiences reponed.

Migration to the cities had been a part of European rural life long before the start of modern industrialisation and urbanisation. In the era of modern development, however, rural-urban migration intensified in an unprecedented way and many rural communities depopulated. While during the pre-industrial period migration had contributed to the economic and social reproduction of rural communities, it now challenged the continuity of the rural lifestyle. This book analyses the topic for the case of Spain, which in the twentieth century experienced one of the most intense processes of rural depopulation in modern Europe. The interaction between Spanish industrialisation and rural migration, the demographic implications of agrarian change, the obstacles to the development of rural non-farm activities, the rural problems of access to infrastructures and services, the role of public policy, and the consequences of depopulation for the rural community are the central elements of this study, which inserts the Spanish case within its European context. Distanced from both the anti-modern stance that idealises paradise lost and the Panglossian mood that welcomes anything that came with modernisation, the book explains how the adaptive strategies put into practice by rural populations led to a “peaceful surrender” of traditional rural society.
