Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of American History This work has been prepared to give as thorough a knowledge of the political, industrial, and territorial development of our country as the limits of a grammar-school textbook will allow. It endeavors to Show the part played by all the elements, racial and religious, that have made contributions to American history. The upbuilding of the United States is indeed a wonder ful story. From the days of the Vikings onward the long procession of valiant Spanish, English, French, and Dutch voyagers, missionaries, and colonizers appears on its pages. The Indian tribes are seen in the woods or on the plains, along the rivers and on the Great Lakes. The scenes of our great historic actions were enacted on a stage made up of mighty areas, unrivaled waterways, primeval forests, boundless plains, and towering mountain systems. Through all the story we can see the Slow development of a representative form of government, which, checked - now here and now there - by royal prerogative, at last burst its bonds and emerged a free people. \tile the path of progress of the Republic has ever led onward, it was not without, now and then, a mighty struggle, as in the great Civil when the nation had to decide whether a government constituted as it was would con tinue to exist. The Republic rendered its decision, and then and there entered on a career of advancement unequaled in the history of mankind. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee Of Eight Of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors Of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment Of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially Of those within the comprehension Of the pupil Of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases Of the political and military history Of the country must be reserved for later study. Book Description
Excerpt from An American History The history of the United States is unique in that it relates definitely to the growth of the American nation, and to the ability of this people to subdue and control the forces of natural environment. It is not a chronicle of the political and military development of a country. For this reason, it has been necessary to note specifically in this text the forces that have brought into existence this new nation. These forces are: First, the many nationalities that have helped to form this composite people; second, the European influences that have molded a tolerant and liberal-minded state; and third, the adjustment of old world civilization upon new-world environment. To this end, we find that the study of American history must include: First, the land itself; second, the relation of the European background to American history; third, the adjustment of ideals of religion, government, education, and industry to a primitive country; and fourth, the rela tions of this country in international questions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Student's American History This work follows the same general lines as the author's Leading Facts of American History. It differs, however, from the more elementary manual in many important respects. It is much fuller in its treatment of political and constitutional history, and of the chief events bearing on the development of the nation. It quotes original documents, authorities, and standard writers on the points of greatest interest to the stu dent and the teacher, the object being to let the history of our country speak for itself. As a help to further research, note numbers have been inserted throughout the book referring to upwards of two thousand works of acknowledged merit cited in the Appendix. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of United States History A land rich in natural resources was inhabited by a race of barbarians who had no knowledge of the minerals stored beneath the ground or of the proper cultivation of the soil. They lived principally on the products of the chase and the vegetables of their gardens, which were cared for by the women. They were fierce fighters, but feared all the forces of nature and worshiped what-ever they could not understand. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text Book of American History History is a record Of events that has affected the social welfare. The record of an event is incomplete without an ex planation of its causes and effects. Interpretation is an essen tial part of history. The statement of a fact is not history, but journalism. Generalizing upon facts not themselves recited is philosophy. But history is neither journalism nor philosophy Nor is it a sum of' biographies. A biographical event ects the man's welfare. Because it is of human interest, it not therefore necessarily of historical importance. An epitome of facts, a philosophy of events, or a body of biographical details is not a history, or a school history, how ever it may be entitled. History deals with events of general human interest, tracing them in their sequence and. Order, Show ing their causes and effects. History is essentially a method Of revealing the past by finding its truth and explaining it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Stories of Later American History This book, like Stories of Early American History, follows somewhat closely the course of study prepared by the Committee of Eight, the present volume covering the topics outlined for Grade V, while the earlier one includes the material suggested for Grade IV. It was the plan of that committee to take up in these grades, largely in a biographical way, a great part Of the essential facts Of American history; and with this plan the author, who was a member of that committee, was in hearty accord. This method, it is believed, serves a double purpose. In the first place, it is the best possible way Of laying the foundation for the later and more detailed study Of United States history in the higher grammar grades by those pupils who are to continue in school; and in the second, it gives to that large number Of pupils who will leave school before the end of the Sixth grade - which is at least half Of all the boys and girls in the schools of the country - some acquaintance with the leading men and prominent events of American history. It is without doubt a great mistake to allow half of the pupils to go out from our public schools with almost no knowledge of the moral and material forces which have made this nation what it is to-day. It is an injustice to the young people themselves; it is also an injury to their country, the vigor of whose life will depend much upon their intelligent and patriotic support.
