Book Description
Excerpt from Essays on the Political History of the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Centuries In consenting to edit this translation, I cannot but feel that I have undertaken a task which ought to have been executed by far abler hands. The death of Mrs. Austin has deprived us of one who united a masculine power of understanding with the tact and delicacy peculiar to a woman. Had she fulfilled her intention of looking over these pages the reader might have been sure that the meaning of the author was correctly given, and that it was conveyed to him in pure and idiomatic English. No doubt, too, the fact that those who have executed the translation are near and dear to her, would have secured at her hands peculiar care in its supervision. Book Description
This is a study of the words of political discourse in seventeenth-century England from which we now reconstruct its theories. Taking its starting point in modern theories of language, intellectual history is first reconceptualised. Part 1 presents an overview of the political domain in the seventeenth century arguing that what we see as the political was fugitive and subject to reductionist pressures from better established fields of discourse. Further, there were strong pressures leading towards an indiscriminate and relatively general vocabulary, in turn facilitating the imposition of our anachronistic images of political theory. Part 2 focuses on a sub-set of the political vocabulary, charting the changing relationships between the words subject, citizen, resistance, rebellion, the coinage of rhetorical exchange. The final chapter returns most explicitly to the themes of the introduction, by exploring how the historians own vocabulary can be systematically misleading when taken into the context of seventeenth-century word use.

Book Description
Devoted explicitly to the examination of Ottoman/Turkish-inspired architecture in Western Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in this study Nebahat Avcioglu rethinks the question of cultural frontiers not as separations but as a rapport of heterogeneities. Reclaiming turquerie as cross-cultural art from the confines of the inconsequential exoticism it is often reduced to, Avcioglu analyses hitherto neglected constructions, and links them to notions of self-representation and politics.
