This volume focuses on how travel writing contributed to cultural and intellectual exchange in and between the Dutch- and German-speaking regions from the 1790s to the twentieth-century interwar period. Drawing on a hitherto largely overlooked body of travelers whose work ranges across what is now Germany and Austria, the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium, the Dutch East Indies and Suriname, the contributors highlight the interrelations between the regional and the global and the role alterity plays in both spheres. They therefore offer a transnational and transcultural perspective on the ways in which the foreign was mediated to audiences back home. By combining a narrative perspective on travel writing with a socio-historically contextualized approach, essays emphasize the importance of textuality in travel literature as well as the self-positioning of such accounts in their individual historical and political environments. The first sustained analysis to focus specifically on these neighboring cultural and linguistic areas, this collection demonstrates how topographies of knowledge were forged across these regions by an astonishingly diverse range of travelling individuals from professional scholars and writers to art dealers, soldiers, (female) explorers, and scientific collectors. The contributors address cultural, aesthetic, political, and gendered aspects of travel writing, drawing productively on other disciplines and areas of scholarly research that encompass German Studies, Low Countries Studies, comparative literature, aesthetics, the history of science, literary geography, and the history of publishing.

This volume of essays by Heinz Schilling represents his three main fields of interest in early modern European history. The first section of the book, entitled 'Urban Society and Reformation', deals with urban society in northern Germany and the Netherlands from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The author discusses social structure and changes, the problems of religion and mentality as well as political culture and thinking. The second section, 'confessionalization and Second Reformation', treats the paradigm 'Confessionalization', which denotes a fundamental process of social change within Old European society during the second half of the sixteenth and at the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. The third section, 'The Netherlands — the Pioneer Society of Early Modern Europe', deals with the Northern Netherlands as a model for early modern modernization and as a successful republican and 'bourgeois' alternative to the aristocratic Old European society. The essays collected in this book were originally written in German and published over the last fifteen years. The articles have been revised and the notes have been updated. This volume gives a broader English-speaking audience the possibility to read Heinz Schilling's research. FRANCIS BULHOF "What was Modernism?" That is the title of an address delivered in June of 1960 by the eminent comparatist Harry Levin at Queen's University in King ston, Ontario.1 Apparently, more than a decade ago, in the eyes of this per ceptive analyst of literature and the arts, the modernist movement had become a thing of the past. Having acquired full citizenship in the republic of letters, modernism had outlived itself. The title of Harry Levin's lecture bears an obvious resemblance to that of Fritz Martini's book-length essay Was war Expressionismus?,2 which dealt exclusively with the German variant of the expressionist movement. In the case of German expressionism there is much dispute concerning the precise moment of its decline and fall, but the political conditions provide at least a crucial dividing line in the year 1933. The end of modernism, however, a far more comprehensive movement which was not just limited to one country, is not so easy to determine. And there is also still much discussion about its roots.

In this article, I shall try to give, ffom ray own observation and familiar acquaintance, some account of the life of a people who are almost unknown outside of the rural neighborhoods of their own State, who have much that is peculiar in their language, customs, and beliefs, and whom I have learned heartily to esteem for their native good sense, friendly feeling, and religious character. LANGUAGE. The tongue which these people speak is a dialect of the German, but they generally call it and themselves "Dutch." For the native German who works with them on the farm they entertain some contempt, and the title "Yankee" is with them a synonym for cheat.* As must always be the case where the great majority do not read the tongue which they speak, and live in contact with those who speak another, the language has become mixed and corrupt. Seeing a young neighbor cleaning a buggy, I tried to talk with him by speaking German. "Willst du reiten ?" said I (not remembering that reiten is to ride on horseback). "Willst du reiten?" All my efforts were vain. I was going for cider to the house of a neighboring farmer, and there I asked his daughter what she would say, un der the circumstances, for "Are you going to ride?"
