Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Biography and Criticism An apology may be deemed requisite for offering to the public a work, of which even the germ is found in pieces composed at so early an age. Two consid rations chie y weighed with the writer in permitting the publication. He could not let slip the opportunity Offered of bringing together that portion Of his early performances, to which, however sensible of their defects, he could yet deliberately append his signa ture, setting them apart from that far larger portion which he would now altogether cast behind him, as mere confusions Of a too much wasted youth. And still more powerfully was he in uenced by the re ec tion, which has for a long time had a firm hold on his mind, that, where a reading public is so extended as that Of America, capacities Of literary enjoyment, and susceptibilities to instruction, will vary so much, both in kind and degree, that it is by no means easy, if possible, to judge, within certain limits, from the ah stract character Of a book, whether it will or will not prove useless: and that, therefore, an author, abdi cating, in great measure, the right to decide as to the worthiness or unworthiness Of his compositions, ought to bow to the unsought expression of public will. Such an expression seemed to be found in the Offer of American publishers to issue these volumes: and the author screens himself against all attack, by the plain declaration, that they would not now, perhaps would never, have appeared, but for the enterprise and generosity Of Messrs. Gould and lincoln. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Ecclesiastical Biography I had destined my contributions to the Edinburgh Review to that early forgetfulness which, with a very few remarkable exceptions, attends and befits the whole mass of the periodical literature of our age. But it has seemed good to certain American booksellers to publish, with my name, repeated editions of a series of those con. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Biography 'so they two came along to England together, ' and it was not long before they found at Court a theatre worthy their design. Nor could any twain be better fitted to play there a foremost part. The talent of the one marvellously supplemented the enterprise of the other. Carr was endowed with the very genius of success. He was born for pro sperity and advancement. He had been bred in France, and had there learned those tricks of manner and address which win the favour of kings and ministers. None possessed in larger measure than he the tact of presentation. His handsome face and Stately figure were embellished by the natural grace of his movements. He understood the niceties of ruffs and frills. He showed an equal taste in the cut of his doublet and in the colour of his hose. In brief, he was master of all those qualities which should easily endear him to the wisest fool in Christendom. His deficiencies, cunningly disguised, were as conspicuous as his gifts. He had as little talent for affairs as for scholarship. In any other Court, save that of James, he would have remained a mere gentleman of the household, and done his best to still the voices of ambition and avarice. Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms The result of my researches, however, is given in the following pages, and, on the whole, I have added a good deal to the knowledge of Waine wright's youth, parentage, and personal Connexions. 011 one or two points relevant to his biography I have been obliged by private considerations to be a little less copious than I can, to borrow the American phrase. But no essentials have been sacrificed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished; Vols. I. And II Of his Life of Richter these preliminary observations may be our excuse for saying but little. He brags much, in his Preface, that it is all true and genuine; for Richter's widow, it seems, had, by public advertisement, cautioned the world against it; another biography, partly by the illustrious de ceased himself, partly by Otto, his oldest friend and the appointed Editor of his Works, being actually in preparation. This rouses the indignant Spirit of Doring, and he stoutly asseverates that, his documents being altogether authentic, this biography is no pseudo-biography. With still greater truth he might have asseverated that it was no biography at all. Well are he and Hennings Of Gotha aware thatthis thing of shreds and patches has been vamped together for sale only. Except a few letters to Kunz, the Bamberg Bookseller, which turn mainly on the purchase of spectacles, and the jour neyings and freightage of two boxes that used to pass and repass between Richter and Kunz's circulating library; with three or four notes of Similar importance, and chiefly to other booksellers, there are no biographical documents here, which were not Open to all Europe as well as to Heinrich Doring. Indeed, very nearly one half of the Life is occupied with a description of the funeral and its appendages - how the sixty torches, with a number of lanterns and pitchpans, were arranged; how this Patrician or Professor followed that, through Friedrich Street, Chancery Street, and other streets of Bayreuth; and how at last the torches all went out, as Dr. Gabler and Dr. Spatzier were perorating (decidedly in bom bast) over the grave. Then, it seems, there were meetings held in various parts of Germany, to solemnize the memory of Richter; among the rest, one in the Museum of Frankfort-ou Mayn; where a Doctor Berne speaks another long Speech, if possible in still more decided bombast. Next come threnodies from all the four winds, mostly on very Splay-footed metre. The whole of which is here snatched from the kind oblivion of the newspapers, and lives in Settle's numbers one day more.
