Book Description
Excerpt from The Voyage, and Other English Essays From the Sketch Book This rambling propensity strengthened with my years. Books of voyages and travels became my passion, and in devouring their contents, I neglected the regular exercises of the school. How wistfully would I wander about the pier-heads in fine weather, and watch the parting ships, bound to distant climes - with what longing eyes would I gaze after their lessening sails, and waft myself in imagination to the ends of the earth! Further reading and thinking, though they brought this vague inclination into more reasonable bounds, only served to make it more decided. I visited various parts of my own country; and had I been merely a lover of fine scenery, I should have felt little desire to seek elsewhere its gratification: for on no country had the charms of nature been more prodigally lavished. Her mighty lakes, like oceans of liquid silver; her mountains, with their bright aerial tints; her valleys, teeming with wild fertility; her tremendous cataracts, thundering in their solitudes; her boundless plains, waving with spontaneous verdure; her broad deep rivers, rolling in solemn silence to the ocean; her trackless forests, where vegetation puts forth all its magnificence; her Skies, kindling with the magic of summer clouds and glorious sunshine, -no, never need an American look beyond his own country for the sublime and beautiful of natural scenery. Book Description
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. Published serially throughout 1819 and 1820, and was published in one volume in 1894 by Altemus' Bookbindery. The collection includes two of Washington's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym "Geoffrey Crayon," which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career.Apart from "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include "Roscoe", "The Broken Heart", "The Art of Book-making", "A Royal Poet", "The Spectre Bridegroom", "Westminster Abbey", "Little Britain", and "John Bull", His stories were highly influenced by German folktales[1] , with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musäus.Stories range from the maudlin (such as "The Wife" and "The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation.

Book Description
Excerpt from Eight Selections From the Sketch Book Washington Irving, one of the earliest and most popular of American writers, was born in New York City in 1783. He received only a common-school education, leaving the schoolroom at sixteen, yet for many years afterward he pursued a systematic course of reading. In his boyhood days he seemed to have a natural talent for writing essays and stories. As he always disliked mathematics, he often wrote composi tions for his schoolmates, and they in turn worked out his problems for him. He studied law for a time, but preferred to employ himself in rambling excursions around Manhattan Island, by which he became famil iar with the beautiful scenery which he afterward made famous by his pen. Thus he acquired that minute knowledge of various historical locations, curious traditions and legends so beautifully made use of in his Sketch Book and History of New York.
