Book Description
Throughout the twentieth century housing displays have proven to be a singular genre of architectural and design exhibitions. By crossing geographies and adopting multiple scales of observation – from domestic space to urban visions – this volume investigates a set of unexplored events devoted to housing and dwelling, organised by technical, professional, cultural or governmental institutions from the interwar years to the Cold War. The book offers a first critical assessment of twentieth-century housing exhibits and explores the role of exhibitions in the codification of notions of domesticity, social models, policies, and architectural and urban discourse. At the intersection of housing studies and the history of exhibitions, The Housing Project not only offers a novel angle on architectural history but also enriches scholarly perspectives in urban studies, cultural and media history, design, and consumption studies. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content). Contributors: Tamara Bjažić Klarin, Gaia Caramellino, John Crosse, Stéphanie Dadour, Rika Devos, Fredie Floré, Johanna Hartmann, Erin McKellar, Laetitia Overney, José Parra-Martínez, Mathilde Simonsen Dahl, Eva Storgaard, Ludovica Vacirca

Book Description
“Occasionally you come across a book that does everything it claims - and then some. This is one” (Blueprint) Architects have been responsible for many of the modern furniture classics of the 20th century - Mies's Barcelona Chair, Eileen Gray's side table and Le Corbusier's chaise longue. Furniture and Architecture takes a unique look at the relationship between architects and furniture design. Focusing not only on classic mid-20th-century design i.e. Eames, Mies, Le Corbusier and Gropius, it also provides a unique insight into who will produce the next generation of classics by asking an international-array of established designers to give their tips for the top young architect-designers. In additional it includes exclusive interviews with high-profile architects as well as with key figures in furniture manufacture and retail. A directory of specialist retailers, who sell architect-designed furniture, makes this an invaluable resource for architects and the interested public. The book includes comprehensive articles and images of popular modernist architects such as Erno Goldfinger, Arne Jacobsen and Eero Saarinen It also features interviews with architects Alvaro Siza, David Adjaye and Selfridges director Vittore Radice Lavishly illustrated with many full-colour images Contains a directory of specialist retailers selling architect-designed furniture

Book Description
From Barnet to Richmond, explore the history of London's Metro-Land A Guide to Modernism in Metro-Land is your essential pocket guide to the modernist architecture of London's suburbs. Inspired by John Betjeman's 1973 documentary Metro-Land and the writing of Ian Nairn, it examines the growth of the city's suburbs from the 1920s up to the present day – a story that is closely interwoven with the development of innovative architecture in Britain – through its most remarkable modernist buildings. Featuring work by architects such as Charles Holden, Erno Goldfinger and Norman Foster, the book covers nine London boroughs and two counties: Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Richmond, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. It is designed to help you explore Metro-Land's modernist heritage, featuring short descriptions of each building alongside maps of the areas covered, and more than 100 colour photographs.

Book Description
The book aims to provide an introductory overview of a period in British architecture which has been neglected hitherto but in which interest is now burgeoning. Using little-before-seen archival photographs from the RIBA's Photographs Collection, it investigates how architects went about the task of reconstruction during the 1950s and the varied influences at play upon them, from Swedish exemplars, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe abroad, to indigenous sources such as the revival of the Picturesque and a heightened concern for Britain's 'functional tradition'. In a period which began with the strictures of post-war austerity and ended with a property boom, the coverage of such themes as the legacy of the Festival of Britain; the heterogeneous nature of post-war Modernism and its acceptance by a previously hostile public; the parallel robust survival of traditional styles; the flowering of public architecture seen especially in Hertfordshire's pioneering school building programme; the role of prefabrication; the development of the New Town movement; the resurgence of private sector architecture and the rise of New Brutalism; the increased involvement of developers in shaping the urban fabric, all combine to demonstrate the period's architectural diversity.
