Book Description
In language teacher education, it is important to fill the gap between theory and practice. In recent years, reflective teaching being suggested to fill this gap has found a crucial place in academic studies. It is generally agreed that reflection helps both pre-service and in-service teachers to develop professionally by presenting a chance of practicing and reflecting on the practice. However, using reflection in teacher education seems to be difficult for both teachers and teacher trainers as the question how to reflect has not been answered in a satisfactory way yet. Hence, this book suggests using a different and new way which is first announced by ECML (European Centre for Modern Languages). This way is the EPOSTL (European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages) that helps prospective teachers reflect on both their linguistic and didactic skills. This book sheds light on the question if the EPOSTL is really useful for reflection in practice and what the challenges of using it in teacher education are.

Book Description
An increasing number of educators are arguing for conceptually sound reflective or inquiry-oriented teacher education programs. The argument is based on the fact that reflective teaching is possible and the belief that teachers should develop habits of consciously informed action. Those who promote reflective teaching argue for teacher empowerment within a self-renewing profession. Reflective Teacher Education offers case studies from seven universities that have organized teacher education programs around the concept of reflection. The cases represent public and private institutions, and alternative and traditional models of teacher preparation. The studies represent efforts to transform the entire professional education component rather than individual courses or isolated strategies. The volume also considers reflection as a conceptual orientation, commenting on its power to inform and improve teacher education, and assessing the implementation of reflection in these specific programs. The six critiques raise intriguing questions about the possibility and desirability of reflective reform efforts by viewing the cases from varying perspectives—development, cognitive, feminist, social reconstructionist, and post-modern.

Book Description
The European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL) is a document intended for students undergoing their initial teacher education which encourages them to reflect on the didactic knowledge and skills necessary to teach languages, helps them to assess their own didactic competences and enables them to monitor their progress and to record their experiences of teaching during the course of their teacher education. It was developed for the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe by a team of teacher educators from Armenia, Austria, Norway, Poland and UK, assisted by student teachers and teacher educators from all 33 member states of the ECML. Building on insights from the Common European Framework of Reference and the European Language Portfolio as well as the European Commission-financed project European Profile for Language Teacher Education - A Frame of Reference (Profile), it seeks to help prepare students for their future profession in a variety of teaching contexts. Further, the EPOSTL can facilitate discussion of aims and curricula between teacher educators working within different national or European contexts.

Book Description
This popular text provides a clear, succinct explanation of how reflection is integral to teachers’ understandings of themselves, their practice, and their context, and elaborates how various conceptions of reflective teaching differ from one another. The emphasis on the importance of both self and context is embedded within distinct and varied educational traditions (conservative, progressive, radical, and spiritual). Throughout the text the reader is encouraged to examine his/her assumptions and understandings of teaching, learning, and schooling and to reflect on self and context. The major goal of this book is to help teachers explore and define their own positions with regard to key topics and issues related to the aims of education in a democratic society. Its core message is that such reflection is essential to becoming more skilled, more capable, and in general better teachers. New in the Second Edition: Underscores use of critical educational texts and film to encourage reflection; highlights emotional features of teaching and reflection; addresses spiritual/contemplative domains in educational traditions; Companion Website.
