Author: Wilderness Education Association, Bloomington, IN.
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
This document presents the proceedings of the Wilderness Education Association's 2005 National Conference on Outdoor Leadership. Following a brief history of the Wilderness Education Association (WEA), 21 conference papers are presented. Topics of the conference papers include: wilderness education curriculum, programs, history, environmental ethics, expedition experiences, cross-cultural expedition, judgment and decision-making, journal writing, leadership, and liability. This paper outlines several paradigms of the adventure and experiential education fields and their relevance in forming a community of people. While there is little in the way of new ideas it is the coming together of different foundations of their adventure field in a usable way for a variety of different groups. This approach has been successfully implemented for school, corporate, family and expedition based groups. (Individual papers contain references.) [Abstract modified to meet ERIC guidelines.].

Student Perceptions of Personal Development of the Wilderness Education Association's 18-point Curriculum After the Successful Completion of a National Standards Program Course
Author: Joseph D. Tanner
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 62
Book Description
This study was conducted to examine the perceived development of the Wilderness Education Association's (WEA) 18-point curriculum by National Standards Program (NSP) course graduates. Nationally, there are no mandatory requirements to meet to become an outdoor leader or guide. Successful completion of the WEA NSP certifies the graduate as an Outdoor Leader through the WEA. Participants for this study were administered a survey requesting demographic information. The survey also consisted of a Lickert scale asking participants to what degree they perceived development of the WEA 18-point curriculum during the NSP course in which they participated. Results indicate that overall the curriculum was rated between "greatly developed" and "somewhat developed". The results also indicated that course structure might play a significant role in the development of the 18-point curriculum. While females ranked overall development the highest, there was not a statistical significant difference in the development of the WEA 18-point curriculum between males and females in this study.

Measuring the Environmental Attitudes of Sixth Graders Before and After an Outdoor Education Experience
Author: Kayla D. Raper
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Environmental protection
Languages : en
Pages : 71
Book Description
The purpose of this applied project was two-fold. One goal of this research was to further the collective knowledge of environmental attitude formation and change. This study aimed to determine if participation in an outdoor education program at White Pines Ranch had any effect on a student’s attitude toward the environment. To measure attitudes, about 100 sixth graders were asked to complete Malkus’ (1992) Adults’ Attitudes Toward the Environment Scale (AATES) before and after completing a residential outdoor education program at White Pines Ranch. The second goal of this research was to satisfy the expressed need of the program directors at White Pines Ranch to get feedback on certain aspects of the program. The teachers and administrators accompanying the students completed a survey that asked about the overall outdoor education experience as well as students’ responses to the program. Many researchers have studied the environmental attitudes of children but none have studied their specific relationship to outdoor education programs.
