Book Description
Excerpt from The Speaker's Favorite: Or Best Things for Entertainments, for Home, Church and School Several of the selections in this book have gestures marked in them for the use of many speakers who would like to enliven a recitation but do not know exactly what gestures to employ. A system of symbols is used, which will be easy to remember when once learned, and a mastery of the principles of gesture as here laid down will be valuable to the reader for life. It is almost impossible in indicated gestures to avoid the idea of mechanical rather than intellectual and spiritual movements and transitions. There are many gestures that can hardly be described, just as there are tones and inflections that belong to the living voice that no system of marking can designate. As these belong to Gmtures of Mphasis and Illustration more than to those of Location, it also happens that the indicated gestures belong mostly to the latter clam. This unavoidable state of things can be remedied only by the speaker's ingenuity, taste, adaptation, and by so carefully practicing the movements given that case and grace shall be secured. Aim to make gestures flow or glide one into the other when possible, yet be particular that the emphatic word or syllable receive a rather firm and decided stroke of the hand from the wrist to give it life. Book Description
Excerpt from The Model 20th Century Speaker: A Book of Entertainment for Home, School and Church; Recitations, Readings, Plays, Drills, Tableaux, Etc., Together With Rules for Physical Culture and for the Training of the Voice and the Use of Gesture, According to the Delsarte System Too much stress cannot be laid upon physical development when one begins to study Elocution. To begin with, the first requirement for public speaking is physical strength. Because in order to become a successful public speaker one must be strong enough to withstand not only the nervous strain nu der which such an one is constantly labor ing, but also the physical strain which of necessity must come to the body from long standing and constant activity in changing from one character to another during an evening's program. Besides, one cannot possibly lose himself in a selection unless the body is free from pain, and perfectly at ease. The least pain or awkwardness in any part of the body, the mind concentrates itself upon that one part to the exclusion of all else, and, instead of decreasing, the pain or awkwardness increases by much thinking on, until the infection spreads over the whole body and finally takes entire possession of the mind as well. Book Description
Many churches, riding the faddish waves of our times, have gone 'to market', but not all. Some churches are trying to 'stay home', that is, remain firmly grounded in the Scriptures. Still, the pressures mount, the temptations are repackaged, and the schemes of the world become more and more persuasive. In This Little Church Stayed Home, Dr. Gilley explores the manifold temptations of conservative churches to sell out to modern trends and innovations, including the present temptation towards mystical theology. Churches toying with 'new measures' will be challenged to remain true to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith and to remain faithful to God's chosen means of converting sinners to himself: the good news of Jesus Christ. Pastors, seminary students, church leaders, and Christians who want God's Word to be paramount in their lives will find This Little Church Stayed Home a timely message to a Christian subculture fixated on marketing the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.
