The illustrations (most of which have not appeared before) present choice examples of the Queen Anne School, the brothers Adam, the Chippendales, Sheraton, Shearer, and Hepplewhite. I have not reproduced any fanciful designs from the illustrated catalogues issued by eighteenth-cen tury cabinet-makers, but have preferred to give illustrations of pieces that were actually made and are to-day the cherished possessions - by inherit ance or purchase - of time-honoured families or dis criminating collectors. English furniture of the eithteenth century has never been more admired or sought after than it is today. This is largely because it possesses a simplicity, a sober elegance and a practical usefulness which make it ideal for modern houses. Such furniture owes as much to good design as to the craftsman's skill, and that is why, in this book, the Victoria and Albert Museum has made an attempt to carry out--for the first time--a systematic survey of the great mass of eighteenth-century designs which has come down to us. Excerpt from English Furniture, Vol. 4: The Sheraton Period; Post-Chippendale Designers, 1760-1820 In the first volume of the series the writers explained at some length that the books were being written for the amateur collector, and more especially the collector of moderate means. This idea has been kept in view all through the series. The writers have endeavoured to give the benefit of their experience to those who, whilst having no desire to turn their homes into museums, would live with interesting old furniture in preference to equally useful but uninteresting new furniture. The present volume covers the period of the post-chippendale designers, from Ince and Mayhew to Sheraton and the Brothers Adam, all of whom lived and worked during the sixty years of the reign of George III. (1760 to Practically all the furniture of the period is suitable for present-day requirements. This is emphasised in the fact that the bulk of the furniture of to-day is modelled on the eighteenth century conventions. A great number of admirable books have been published during recent years dealing with the period, and the present writer records his thanks for the help he has received from them. A short bibliography is included in the volume.
