In the present analytical study of Surah Al-Kahf, edited by Abdul Kader Choughley, Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi (1913-1999), one of the foremost Muslim scholars of modern era, offers a deeply illuminating reflection on the nature, message and meaning of the Surah. Surah Al-Kahf, with its 110 verses, revealed in the last phase of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) mission in Makkah, presents an account of the clash between two doctrines, two ideologies and two mindsets. One of these stands for materialism and reliance on material factors whereas the other one signifies faith in Allah, the most merciful God, and the things that lie beyond our perception (Al-Ghayb). The Surah, as it unfolds through the stories such as the People of the Cave, the Owners of Two Gardens, Prophet Moses and Al-Khidr (peace be upon them) and Dhū l Qarnayn, takes us beyond the outer-reality of our earthly life to its inner-reality (Al-Ākhirah), by succinctly spelling out the belief systems, the moral consequences of our beliefs and actions, etc. Abdul Kader Choughley, an independent South African Muslim scholar, has contributed enormously to the revival of South Asian Muslim scholarship, during the past decade or so, with several valuable studies on Islam in South Asia, focusing on Islamic revivalism. Some other important works of Choughley's contribution to the Islamic revivalism discourse are: Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi: Life and Legacy and Fazlur Rahman Ansari Aligarh Years: 1933-1947 (Tawasul International Publishing, Rome, 2024). Of notable mention is How to Study the Qurʾān: Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi's Approach (Tawasul International Publishing, Rome, 2024), which is an expanded version of his lecture delivered at the K.A. Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies, Aligarh Muslim University.

A Philosophy of Christian Materialism offers a new religious engagement with the public sphere via means of interdisciplinary analysis and empirical examples, developing what the authors call a Relational Christian Realism building upon interaction with contemporary Philosophy of Religion. The book argues that the current discourse on public religion is inadequate in addressing the issues now to be faced, including: material religious practice in the sphere of education; the growth of alternative political movements and the developing awareness of environmental concerns and urban social justice. This book argues that identified weaknesses in recent theological engagement with New Materialism can be successfully addressed by incorporating insights from Relational Christian Realism. Central themes are those of the relational and the apophatic as they represent different but essential strands of a materialist theology. The relational refers to the work of Deleuze and its influence upon key New Materialist thinkers such as De Landa, Bryant, and Braidotti but supplemented from Relational Christian Realism by Latour and Badiou and with reference to the concept of the apophatic as found in Keller and Kearney. Examining the concepts of transcendence, human agency, and a New Enlightenment, the book moves into more practical areas of aesthetics and technology concluding with a response to the contemporary apocalyptic of climate change. Being “beyond in the midst” requires developing spaces of faithful dissent and holding the tension between the relational and the apophatic in theology.

Despite the fact that Christianity is understood to be thoroughly intertwined with matter, objects, and things, Christians struggle to cope with this materiality in their daily lives. This volume argues that the ambivalent relationships many Christians have with materiality is a driving force that contributes to the way people in different Christian traditions and in different parts of the world understand and live out their religion. By placing the questions of limits and boundary-work to the fore, the volume addresses the question of exactly how Christianity takes place materially, addressing a gap in studies to date. Christianity and the Limits of Materiality presents ground-breaking research on the frameworks and contexts in relation to and within which Christian logics of materiality operate. The volume places the negotiations at the limits of materiality within the larger framework of Christian identities and politics of belonging.
