Book Description
The book has been written to tell our experiences of 15 years in Finland and to give a little taste of this country to people who do not know it. It is not a view from a short time visitor. It is a love and affection that has developed by spending half a year in Finland for a long time, through beautiful Summers and very harsh Winters, living in a small community where the sense of its past is prevailing. The purpose of the bood is to make Finland better known and appreciated by the world at large but foremost to have the Finns understand themselves and their country, overcoming their fundamental shiness towards foreigners, despite their technical achievements in the modern society and the ggeneral respect they enjoy as a Nation on the global scene. This is not a travel book. It is simp,ly an analysis of the character and the habits of the Finns and an attempt to capture in words the natural beauty of a land at the edge of the world.

The Perfect Fence
Author: Lyn Ellen Bennett
Publisher: Texas A&M University Press
ISBN: 1623495822
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
Barbed wire is made of two strands of galvanized steel wire twisted together for strength and to hold sharp barbs in place. As creative advertisers sought ways to make an inherently dangerous product attractive to customers concerned about the welfare of their livestock, and as barbed wire became commonplace on battlefields and in concentration camps, the fence accrued a fascinating and troubling range of meanings beyond the material facts of its construction. In The Perfect Fence, Lyn Ellen Bennett and Scott Abbott explore the multiple uses and meanings of barbed wire, a technological innovation that contributes to America’s shift from a pastoral ideal to an industrial one. They survey the vigorous public debate over the benign or “infernal” fence, investigate legislative attempts to ban or regulate wire fences as a result of public outcry, and demonstrate how the industry responded to ameliorate the image of its barbed product. Because of the rich metaphorical possibilities suggested by a fence that controls through pain, barbed wire developed into an important motif in works of literature from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Early advertisements proclaimed that barbed wire was “the perfect fence,” keeping “the ins from being outs, and the outs from being ins.” Bennett and Abbott conclude that while barbed wire is not the perfect fence touted by manufacturers, it is indeed a meaningful thing that continues to influence American identities.

Wicked Prescott
Author: Parker Anderson
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1625857063
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
Swindlers, confidence men and outlaws--the mountain shadows and Ponderosa pines surrounding Prescott conceal their grim histories and crooked ways. The small hamlet turned mining town became Arizona's first capital in 1864, and with wealth and power came every type of vice and crime. One block west of the famed Whiskey Row, the roaring red-light district attracted ladies of easy virtue, who often became victims of crimes of passion and coldblooded murder. Legendary crook Fleming "Jim" Parker escaped from Yavapai County Jail on the back of the sheriff's stolen horse. Cattle rustlers terrorized nearby ranches, while tavern brawls and liquor-fueled shootouts dominated newspaper headlines. More than ten legal hangings brought criminals to justice. Local author Parker Anderson recounts these and more wicked misdeeds from Prescott's wild early days.
