Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Designed for Academies and High Schools In the present volume I have attempted to exhibit the leading principles of Natural Philosophy in a methodical and scientific form, without any use of the mathematics beyond the first elements of Algebra, Geometry, and Plane Trigonometry. Every principle is enunciated clearly and concisely, and, as far as practicable, I have exhibited the evidence upon which every principle rests. Even when the full demonstration involves an acquaintance with the more difficult parts of the mathematics, I have endeavored to give an outline of the philosophical principles upon which the mathematical demonstration is founded. Those principles which are considered specially important have been printed in italics, so as readily to attract the attention of the pupil. While the leading obj eet has been to teach general principles, care has been taken to combine with them a variety of useful information, and particularly to give an account of many recent discoveries in every branch of the science. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Designed as a d104-Book for Academies, High-Schools, and Colleges The work now offered to the public was originally compiled and designed for the use of pupils under the immediate instruction of the author. In preparing the work, the object has been, in the First place, to include a larger amount of modern science than is found in the text-books which are generally accessible to those who are commencing the study of Natural Philosophy; and at the same time to give as much of conciseness and clearness to the different branches of the science as was consistent with their nature and importance; and, in the Second place, to prepare a text-book which should be a medium between the larger works and those generally used in our academies and higher institutions. The following are the principal features of the work: At the head of each section an analysis is given in-the form of propositions, in order that the student may have a general view of what the section contains. The advantage of this the author has found, by long experience, to be very great, as it fixes in the memory the leading and fundamental principles of the science, and habituates the mind to analyze and systematize the various topics which may come under review. Another feature of the work is the introduction of examples in the form of problems, in order to render each principle familiar, and to enable the student to make a practical application of his knowledge.
