Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Hydraulics The remarkable impetus recently given to hydraulic development in this country has caused the whole subject to assume a new aspect. Not only is this apparent in new and improved construction details, but in the scientific study which is beginning to be given a subject which seemed to have crystallized into a set of empirical formulas. Such comprehensive plans as those recently undertaken by the State of New York and the Dominion of Canada for the systematic development of all their available water power, indicates the extent of the field now opening to the hydraulic engineer. The extent and cheapness of the natural power obtained not only from the development of existing streams but also from the artificial pondage of storm water is sufficient to convince even the most casual observer that no phase of conservation will have a more immediate effect on our industrial development or be more far reaching in its consequences. The present text is intended to be a modern presentation of the fundamental principles of hydraulics, with applications to recent important works such as the Catskill aqueduct, the New York State barge canal, and the power plants at Niagara Falls and Keokuk. Although the text stops short of turbine design, the recent work of Zowski and of Baashuus is so presented as to enable the young engineer to make an intelligent choice of the type of development and selection of runner. In order to make the book of practical working value, a collection of typical modern problems is added at the end of each section, and a set of the most useful hydraulic data has been compiled and is tabulated at the end of the volume. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Hydraulics, Vol. 1: A d104-Book for Secondary Technical Schools In the following pages the attempt is made to give a presentation of the subject of hydraulics without the use of higher mathematics. The degree of preparation required of the reader is merely that now given in high schools, and includes only arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, and an elementary course in mechanics. In particular the author has had in mind the students in the upper classes of secondary technical schools, and it has been his aim to present the subject in such a manner that it may be readily comprehended by them. It is believed that the essential principles and methods of hydraulics have been covered, although an expert can easily criticise the book on the ground that certain topics have been inadequately treated or omitted altogether. While it has been harder for the author to decide what should be omitted than what should be included, it has been his intention to discuss, as fully as seemed consistent with the assigned limit of space, those topics which are of greatest importance in practical engineering work. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Hydraulics Many letters from foreign countries have urged the author to introduce the metric system of measures into the book. To meet this demand, the most important metric data, coefficients, formulas, and problems are given at the end of each chapter, and the student who follows these will have no occasion to transform English measures, but may learn to think in metric units and to use them without hesitation. The hydraulic tables have been gathered together at the end Of the volume, instead of being scattered throughout the text, and it is believed that this plan affords the advantage that a table can be more readily found. The most important tables are presented both in the English and in the metric system, the latter not being a mere transformation Of the former, but being arranged to be used with metric arguments. Book Description
Excerpt from d104-Book on Hydraulics Hydraulics, although the derivation of the word signifies the flow of water in a pipe, and thus implies motion. There are naturally two divisions of the subject, Hydrostatics, a discussion of liquids at rest, and Hydrodynamics, a study of liquids in motion.
