Book Description
This work is the first descriptive grammar of Kashkay, in its Amaleh variety, a Turkic language of the Oghuz branch spoken in Iran, primarily in the province of Fars. It is based on data collected by the author during several field trips conducted among the Kashkay. As a native speaker of this language, the author himself has provided many examples. The dissertation consists of an introduction, the grammar, a corpus of texts, and appendices. The introduction provides information about different aspects of the Kashkay community. It gives also an account of the current status of the Kashkay language. The grammar, composed of sixteen chapters, follows a traditional layout. It starts with the phonology, continues with word classes and main topics of morphology; then it deals with the main usual chapters of the syntax. The corpus, selected from a large body of data, comprises various types of the Kashkay oral literature. It contains also interviews, which represent the spoken Kashkay of everyday life among Amaleh speakers. The transcribed texts are provided with an English translation. The appendix includes a fully glossed text, a glossary of Kashkay words with their French and English meanings, several tables representing morphophonologic features of Kashkay suffixes, a list of suffixes, and a bibliography of cited and consulted works.

Possession in Languages of Europe and North and Central Asia
Author: Lars Johanson
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027263000
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 413
Book Description
This volume is a collection of articles dealing with the linguistic category of possession and its expression in languages spoken in Europe and North and Central Asia (Uralic, Turkic, Indo-European and Caucasian), with a few excursions into other parts of the world. Some papers engage in typological comparisons, both within and beyond the borders of individual language families focusing on issues of motivation; meaning and forms used in expressing possession; typology of belong constructions; marking possession in possessor chains; non-canonical possessives and their relation to the category of familiarity; metaphoric shifts of possessive semantics. Others focus on possession in individual languages, offering new precious pieces of information on the linguistic expression of possession in lesser known languages, some of which are endangered and even unwritten. The volume will be of interest to both general linguists and typologists as well as to experts/students of the individual languages or language families analyzed in the papers.

Congruence in Contact-Induced Language Change
Author: Juliane Besters-Dilger
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110373017
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
Modern contact linguistics has primarily focused on contact between languages that are genetically unrelated and structurally distant. This compendium of articles looks instead at the effects of pre–existing structural congruency between the affected languages at the time of their initial contact, using the Romance and Slavic languages as examples. In contact of this kind, both genetic and typological similarities play a part.
