Excerpt from Apparatus for the Determination Aboard Ship of the Salinity of Sea Water by the Electrical Conductivity Method To give satisfactory results the apparatus should be capable of reproducing measurements of the electrical conductivity to 1 part in corresponding roughly to changes of 10 mg per liter total salt and something less than 1 part in in the density. This could be obtained readily in the laboratory, but the conditions at sea are such as to make the problem much more difficult. For convenience in use, the equipment should be relatively small in size and constitute a unit rather than an assemblage of a number of pieces of apparatus. Further, it should be capable of being operated from the lighting circuit of the ship on which it is installed. The equipment must be sufficiently rugged or so protected as not to suffer mechanical injury during the severest storms, and should be capable of being used during rough weather. The electrical insula tion must remain good in the presence of an ocean atmosphere, and should not be injured in case sea water is spilled over parts of the apparatus. As the temperature coefficient of the electrical conduc tivity of sea water is in the neighborhood of 2 or 3 per cent per C., to obtain a precision of 1 part in the temperature must be controlled to better than one-hundredth C. Or provision made to compensate for uncertainties of the temperature. Also the various manipulations necessary in making measurements should be the simplest possible consistent with obtaining the precision sought. Excerpt from An Electrical Method of Determining the Soluble Salt Content of Soils: With Some Results of Investigations on the Effect of Water and Soluble Salts on the Electrical Resistance of Soils The moist soil is thoroughly mixed with a Dover's egg'beater, securely fastened to a sh elf or table, to distribute the water uniform throughout the mass of soil. The soil must not be mixed with the hands, as the salts from the hands are liable to Vitiate the results, especially in a warm room where the hands are perspiring freely. The soil should be put in a round-bottom bowl or in a heavy glass cover, such as is used in the laboratory to protect apparatus and specimens from dust. With clay soils especially it is well to empty the soil out of the bowl and pour it back again once to insure thorough mixin g of the water or solution throughout the mass of soil. Excerpt from The Electrical Conductivity of Non-Aqueous Solutions Van't Hoff formulated his modern theory of solutions from the results of Pfeffer's classic experiments on the osmotic pressure of a few substances in aqueous solutions, and from the work of de Vries 3 who pointed out that equimolecular quantities of dissolved substances produce the same osmotic pressure. Van't Hoff' stated that the condition of a substance in the gaseous state is analogous to the condition in which a substance exists in dilute solutions wherein the osmotic pres sure of the dissolved substance corresponds to the pressure of the gaseous particles. It was soon observed, ahowever, that many substances did not give normal values for the osmotic pressure, the rise of the boiling, or lowering of the freezing point; and thus that the laws of gases would not hold for solu tions of these substances.
