Book Description
A Radium 226 radioactive collector was used to measure the electric potential gradient at the meteorological research station, Toronto, for a period of about seven months in 1967. The potential gradient data are presented and the diurnal variations of the potential gradient for the summer, autumn and whole seven months period are computed. In addition to the atmospheric potential gradient observations, simultaneous measurements of the relative humidity, temperature, pressure, and wind speed were made. Diurnal variations during all weather and fair weather, spectral density estimates, cross spectral amplitude spectra, coherence and phase spectra were computed. The contribution to the total variance and time of maximum of diurnal, semidiurnal, terdiurnal and quartodiurnal components were calculated using harmonic analysis. The rate of decrease of the relative humidity and the rate of increase of temperature together appeared to influence the potential gradient. Theories of the radioactive collector, the cross spectral and harmonic analysis are discussed in brief.
