Book Description
Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of Electric Light and Power Supplies In presenting our third regular catalogue, devoted particularly to the exposition of electric light and power supplies, we desire to call attention to its completeness as a whole, as well as to express the hope that it will not only demonstrate the same care in compilation as our previous edi tions, but will also bear evidence to the fact that we have endeavored to keep fully up to the times, while perhaps it may be observed that in some things we are in advance of them. We have not blindly copied from ot/zer trade publications, but on each and every article described in this catalogue we have brought to bear a careful and expert examination and study, and by this means we have been enabled to winnow from its pages all such articles as did not seem to add to the value of our catalogue as a whole. We feel that the illustrations are deserving of special mention, as they have been prepared with unusual care, the better to picture the goods exactly as they are. Each article in the catalogue will be found fully illustrated, as we believe a correct representation is just as effective and perhaps more satisfactory than lengthy printed descriptions. Since the publication of our last catalogue we have added to our organiza tion a completely equipped Electrical Engineering Department, and all new articles before they are regularly added to our line are carefully investi gated, and must bear the stamp of approval of the head of this depart ment. We hope that our efforts in this direction will be the means of still further raising the standard of our goods, and will enable us to make the broad claim, without fear of contradiction, that our goods are of the highest grade obtainable. We have recently moved into a large and well-appointed building in Chicago, which, we believe, will still better enable us to improve our facili ties for the rapid and careful transaction of our business. Our extensive manufacturing facilities in Ansonia, Conn., and in Chicago, make it possi ble for us to offer unusual advantages to all classes of electrical buyers. The growth and enlarge ment of the collections has been particularly marked in the fields of mining and mineral industries; mechanical engineering, especially pertaining to the steam engine, internal combustion engine and loco motive naval architecture, and electrical engineering, particularly the development of the telegraph, telephone and the electric light. In the acquisition of objects visualizing the history of electric light the Museum has been rather fortunate, particularly as regards the developments in the United States. Thus mention may be made of the original Patent Office models of the more important dynamos, arc lights and incandescent lights, together with original commercial apparatus after these models a unit of the equipment used in the first commercially successful installation on land of an incandescent lighting system, presented by Joseph E. Hinds in whose engraving establish ment in New York City the installation was made in 1881 and a large series of incandescent lights, mainly originals, visualizing chrono logically the developments of the Edison light from Its inception, pre sented at intervals since the year 1898 by the General Electric Company. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Electric Lighting The aim of the author has been to supply the requirements of those who are anxious to obtain an elementary knowledge of the primary principles of Electric Lighting, but who have neither the time nor the inclination to read the' subject at the length at which it is generally treated in text-books, and who moreover have not the mathematical aptitude and acquaintance with mechanical terms and methods that are indispensable to anyone who desires to grasp the complete theory and full details of this important though compara tively new branch of science. As a stepping-stone to treatises of a more advanced and elaborate nature, this little work may likewise be found use ful by those who purpose making a more extended study of the subject.
