El 6 de diciembre de 1996 la UNESCO declaraba a Cuenca como Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad por ser un ejemplo de ciudad medieval fortificada que conserva su paisaje urbano original y que confluye a la perfección con paisaje natural que la rodea. Han pasado casi 27 años y Cuenca ha mantenido esos valores que la hicieron merecedora de ese galardón, adaptándose a los nuevos tiempos, pero conservando esa raíz histórica que la ata a las rocas sobre las que está erigida. Esa herencia recibida debemos gestionarla de manera adecuada, ya que es nuestro bien más preciado. Por ello, era necesario reunir en una monografía a diversos expertos que analizasen desde un punto de vista interdisciplinar algunas cuestiones de los procesos formativos de la ciudad, tanto geográficos como históricos, y constructivos. Así surge este trabajo, que bajo el título La construcción y el paisaje en las ciudades Patrimonio Mundial. Historia, gestión y procesos, nos adentra en los valores que hicieron a Cuenca merecedora de ser ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad y en cómo se debe gestionar este galardón en el futuro.

This book uses the reflection of academics specialized in the urban area of Latin America, Europe and the United States, to initiate a comparative debate of the different dynamics in which Urbicidio expresses itself. The field or focal point of analysis that this publication approaches is the city, but under a new critical perspective of inverse methodology to that has been traditional used. It is about understanding the structural causes of self-destruction to finally thinking better and then going from pessimism to optimism. It is a deep look at the city from an unconventional entrance, because it is about knowing and analyzing what the city loses by the action deployed by own urbanites, both in the field of its production and in the field of its consumption. Not all World Heritage Sites have people living within or close by their boundaries, but many do. The designation of World Heritage status brings a new dimension to the functioning of local communities and particularly through tourism. Too many tourists accentuated by the World Heritage label, or in some cases not enough tourists, despite anticipation of increased numbers, can act to disrupt and disturb relations within a community and between communities. Either way, tourism can be seen as a form of activity that can generate interest and concern as it is played out within World Heritage Sites. But the relationships that World Heritage Sites and their consequent tourism share with communities are not just a function of the number of tourists. The relationships are complex and ever changing as the communities themselves change and are built upon long-standing and wider contextual factors that stretch beyond tourism. This volume, drawing upon a wide range of international cases relating to some 33 World Heritage Sites, reveals the multiple dimensions of the relations that exist between the sites and local communities. The designation of the sites can create, obscure and heighten the power relations between different parts of a community, between different communities and between the tourism and the heritage sector. Increasingly, the management of World Heritage is not only about the management of buildings and landscapes but about managing the communities that live and work in or near them.
