Book Description
In this study exploring the ideology of domestic life in Spain, Bridget Aldaraca breaks new ground in the study of women, ideology, and the realist novel. Among other themes, she investigates the period's changing concepts of the family, women's roles in society, the division of social space into private and public spheres, and attitudes toward conspicuous consumption, sexuality, and mental illness. Aldaraca begins by charting the evolution of women's roles within the family from the Spanish Counter-Revolution, through the Enlightenment, and up to 1900. She then analyzes the personification of the feminine ideal through the literary creation of "the angel of the house" in the novels of the nineteenth-century writer Benito Perez Galdos. In addition to its insights about this ubiquitous nineteenth century figure, this book serves to introduce Anglophone scholars to some of the great literary and ideological questions of nineteenth-century Spanish studies.

Book Description
In Rewriting Womanhood, Nancy LaGreca explores the subversive refigurings of womanhood in three novels by women writers: La hija del bandido (1887) by Refugio Barragán de Toscano (Mexico; 1846–1916), Blanca Sol (1888) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera (Peru; 1845–1909), and Luz y sombra (1903) by Ana Roqué (Puerto Rico; 1853–1933). While these women were both acclaimed and critiqued in their day, they have been largely overlooked by contemporary mainstream criticism. Detailed enough for experts yet accessible to undergraduates, graduate students, and the general reader, Rewriting Womanhood provides ample historical context for understanding the key women’s issues of nineteenth-century Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico; clear definitions of the psychoanalytic theories used to unearth the rewriting of the female self; and in-depth literary analyses of the feminine agency that Barragán, Cabello, and Roqué highlight in their fiction. Rewriting Womanhood reaffirms the value of three women novelists who wished to broaden the ruling-class definition of woman as mother and wife to include woman as individual for a modern era. As such, it is an important contribution to women’s studies, nineteenth-century Hispanic studies, and sexuality and gender studies.

Book Description
This book explores how notions of deviancy and social control are dramatized in the novels of the late nineteenth-century Spanish realist author Benito Pérez Galdós. Galdós’s treatment of prostitutes, alcoholics, beggars and vagrants is studied within the context of the socio-cultural and medical debates circulating during the period. Drawing on Foucault’s very specific conceptualization of the idea of control through discourses, the book analyzes how Galdós’s novels interacted with contemporary debates on poverty and deviancy – notably, discourses on hygiene, domesticity and philanthropy. It is proposed that Galdós’s view of marginal social groups was much more open-minded, shrewd and liberal than the often inflexible pronouncements made by contemporary professional voices.

Book Description
"This book is a collection of eleven essays devoted to the work of Ramon del Valle-Inclan (1866-1936). Long the recipient of critical analyses from various perspectives, Valle-Inclan's writing has nevertheless been virtually neglected in the gender-based criticism that has given rise to important studies of his contemporaries in other European literatures. This means that his diverse female characters have not been fully examined, that many scholars continue to consider him an unqualified misogynist, and that a marked effort to surmount gender constraints, present throughout his work, has not been acknowledged, much less explicated. This lack of study is intimately related to a much broader lacuna in Hispanic literature and scholarship, for the working of gender norms and their interaction with economic, religious, and political institutions inscribed in the literature of turn-of-the-century Spain have only recently begun to receive detailed study." "The essays in this volume identify, explore, and interrogate issues of gender with respect to Valle-Inclan's writing. The results offer an altered portrait of Valle-Inclan in which attitudes attributed to him are questioned and reevaluated. In particular, studies of several strong female characters indicate that he envisioned a far more complex role for women than has formerly been recognized." "Three previously published essays were chosen to provide a grounding in work on gender and Valle-Inclan. The remaining essays were written for this volume. As an orientation for the reader and in order to assure that the collection will be of use and interest to non-Hispanists as well as specialized readers, an introduction to the collection defines the intentions of the editors, discusses the essays with respect to current criticism, and places Valle-Inclan and his writing in turn-of-the-century Spanish history and aesthetics. As a whole, the collection reads as far more than the sum of its individual essays, prompting a fuller appreciation of both Valle-Inclan and the social and cultural system to which he belongs."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
