Book Description
This volume covers, for the first time, the interaction of a major historical event with the development of the Egyptian Solar-Osirian theology. Pharaoh Ramesses II visited the sacred area of Abydos soon after his recognition of power at Luxor in Thebes. With him were many high officials, one of whom would be soon appointed to be the high Priest of Amun at Thebes, Nebwenenef. During his visit, the king stressed his personal relationship with his father, Seti I as well as ordering the completion of his temple. By analyzing certain passages within Ramesses’ official acccount, the Dedicatory Inscription, with others of Seti, a more nuanced appreciation of the growing theological system of Osirus plus Re, the sun god, comes to the fore. This significance of this is heightened when we remember that the king's account was exhibited in the portico of Seti I’s temple. "Anthony Spalinger’s new monograph discusses the Great Dedicatory Inscription and these processes anew by means of perspicuous, accurate, translations of the surviving texts, enlivened by equally stimulating commentaries. These are accompanied likewise by meticulously researched footnotes, which have been marshaled with a diligence for which the author is rightly renowned...All of this is done here with exemplary skill and a fine eye for detail, and our libraries are far the richer for it." Book Description
The aim of Professor Kenneth Kitchen?s magisterial Ramesside Inscriptions is simple?to make available the principal historical and biographical texts of the Ramesside age (c.1300?1070 bc) in a comprehensive, compact and accurate edition that should be comprehensive but handy to use. It does not, however, include purely literary, ritual and funerary texts.0This book covers the whole of the texts of the Later Nineteenth Dynasty, namely all that was subsequent to the reign of Ramesses II, i.e. for the reigns of Merenptah through to Tewosret (c.1213?1186 bc, or only to 1189 bc, depending on whether Amenmesses was full ruler or merely a Theban contemporary of Sethos II). They include the ?official? and royal records issued or engraved in the king?s name, personifying (as he did) the effective government of ancient Egypt for his time, as well as texts that concern primarily, or were left us by, the king?s subjects at all levels of society, from viziers and viceroys at the head of the royal administration (along with priesthoods and the military) down through society?s echelons to the workmen who laboured in the royal tombs in Western Thebes (based in Deir el-Medina village) and the humble folk that served them.00First published in fifteen individual fascicles between 1968 and 1982 by B. H. Blackwell (Oxford), this volume is re-printed here for the first time in a single, handsome, book.

Kitchen and now taken up by Benedict G. Davies, systematically presents essential bibliographical references, introductions and background to every item translated in the first series. It also provides specialist notes and commentaries on finer points of detail where appropriate"--Series title page.
