Field experiments were conducted at Purdue Agronomy Farm, in 1975 and 1976, to investigate the effect of subtoxic rates of DNBP on the yield and other agronomic characteristics of grain sorghum, hybrids NK 300 and RS 610. tHE dnbp rates tested ranged from 1 to 64 g/ha and were applied at five different stages of plant development. None of the rates tested in either the year or hybrid induced a significant change in yield over the control. Also no significant differences were observed in plant height, head weight, heads per plot, head moisture, shelling percent or protein in the grain. However, the rate of 16 g/ha caused a significant decrease as compared to the control in the weight per seed of RS 610, in 1975. The other rates tested in both years and hybrids showed no significant change over this plant characteristic. A set of experiments was conducted to investigate the uptake os sucrose from a 10 mM sucrose solution by corn leaf discs treated and untreated with subtoxic rates of DNBP. In five experiments where the uptake of sucrose by the discs treated with 0.7 mM DNBP solution were compared with the control, four of them showed that the uptake by the DNBP treated discs were not significantly differnt from the control during the first 10 minutes of incubation. However, after 10 minutes sucrose uptake by the untreated discs was significantly greater than DNBP treated discs.
