Book Description
The work here described is a part of a more extended investigation on nondestructive methods of testing wire rope. Data are given in terms of magnetic reluctivity showing the effect of stress on the magnetic properties. It is found that the reluctivity, which is a linear function of the magnetizing force for pure homogeneous materials, no longer shows such a linear relationship when tension is applied to the wire. It is shown how two components of the material different in only as regards stress condition and each following the linear relationship can be combined to give the results found by experiment. This method of analysis seems to be capable of further development and extension into other fields of magnetic analysis. Description: p. 681-695 : ill.

In 1901 the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) was founded to provide standard weights and measures and to be the national physical laboratory for the United States of America. The NBS conducted a lot of research in the fields of science and technology which were reported as "Scientific Papers." In 1988 the NBS became what we know now; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This is one of those documents written by employees of the NBS.

Effect of Wear on the Magnetic Properties and Tensile Strength of Steel Wire

Pages : 10
Book Description
The work here described is part of a more extended investigation on nondestructive methods of testing wire rope. IN order to design intelligently apparatus for the nondestructive testing of wire rope it is necessary to know the nature and magnitude of the effects involved. One of the causes of deterioration in wire rope is wear, and this paper is a description of the work done to determine the effect of wear on the magnetic properties and tensile strength of steel wire of the type used in the manufacture of wire rope. It was found that wear increases the magnetic permeability for low values of magnetizing force and decreases it for higher forces. This effect is similar to the effect of stress, though much less in magnitude, and is attributed to redistribution of internal stress. This change in magnetic properties is accompanied by an increase in tensile strength.
