Book Description
This report results from a contract tasking Institute for Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences as follows: The effect of strain rate on ductile fracture is one of the least understood phenomena in modern fracture mechanics. At the same time, information on ductile fracture under dynamic loading is very important for reliable prediction of fracture and fragmentation of high consequence structures. High-consequence structures are understood here as components of turbofan engines for fixed-wing aircraft and/or rotorcraft dynamic components. A comprehensive theoretical, experimental, and numerical research project will be undertaken to resolve some of the fundamental issues and construct a dynamic fracture locus suitable for engineering applications and implementation into the FE codes. It is envisioned that the project will be broken into three interrelated tasks: Hopkinson bar tensile fracture tests on small, flat specimens using a unique apparatus developed at IPPT; Drop tower fracture tests on specially designed specimens subjected to a combined shear/compression and shear/tension loading; Finite element simulation of dynamic experiments and construction of the dynamic fracture envelope for a few typical materials. The second and third task will be a joint endeavour between IPPT and MIT where the funding for the work at MIT will come from GE Global Research Center and the funding for the IPPT will come from this grant. No government furnished equipment or data will be used by the researchers at IPPT.

Book Description
Dual phase (DP) steels are being increasingly used as structural components in the automotive industry owing to their combination of high strength and moderate ductility.Formability and crash resistance are important mechanical properties that expose the steel to high strain rates.Fracture characteristics of a DP steel at strain rates spanning seven orders of magnitude are investigated using quantitative fractography. The DP steel investigated in this study is comprised of a continuous matrix of martensite with interspersed ferrite islands. The data reveal that the flow stress, uniform strain, and ductility are substantially higher at the higher strain rates.Quantitative fractography, employed to understand the fracture characteristics, shows an increase in the extent of ductile fracture at high strain rates. In this presentation, the results demonstrating high strain rates facilitating dimpled ductile fracture and/or increased resistance to faceted fracture are discussed.

Book Description
The growth and coalescence of voids is a common mechanism of fracture in ductile materials. Analytical work on the problem to date has dealt mainly with isolated voids in perfectly plastic materials, so that strain hardening and interactions between neighboring voids have been neglected. These features of void growth are examined here, but only for a simple geometrical configuration. In particular, the growth of single infinitely long cylindrical voids in bodies of rigid-plastic, strain-hardening material is considered. Bodies with both finite and infinite dimensions normal to the void surface are included in the analysis. The exact relation among the pertinent variables: transverse stress, axial strain, hardening coefficient, void strain and void growth rate is presented. Solution via a bounding technique is given for two general cases. The first case is that of an imposed constant void growth rate and the second case is an imposed constant transverse stress. The results show a decelerating effect of hardening on void growth. Application to the ductile fracture problem of void growth in the neck of a tensile specimen demonstrates the accelerating effect of void growth due to interactions between voids. (Author).
