Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Wheat is the world's most important agricultural commodity. In Europe, where wheat is the main staple, bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) covers the majority of land on which wheat is cropped. Wheat breeders and technologists have contributed greatly to the continued success of bread wheat and its products. The `bread-making quality' of a wheat variety can be described in relation to the processing its kernels must undergo to make a good bread. Bread wheat kernels must be suitable for proper milling into a flour that can produce a dough capable of becoming fine bread. The type of bread varies depending on local bread-making practices. Part I of this book contains a study of the anatomy and chemical composition of wheat kernels, and of the fundamental difference between `soft' and `hard' kernelled varieties. It relates these characteristics to the processes of milling, dough-making and manufacturing of bread, and to biscuit and pasta making. The genetic basis for these characteristics is illustrated, and assay methods for characterizing wheat varieties - ranging from Saunders' chewing test to the most recent developments in glutenin and gliadin research - are evaluated. Part II briefly describes - country by country - how bread-making quality has been integrated into wheat-breeding programmes throughout Europe, and how breeders have attempted to resolve the conflict between yield and quality. It describes how quality wheats `travelled' around the world - from their endogenic source in Eastern Europe to North America, and back again to Europe. This explains how specific genetic material can appear in the pedigrees of varieties grown in a wide range of agro-ecological zones. In addition to giving an interesting historical survey, the book points the way forward for breeders' efforts in the future. Bread-Making Quality updates and interprets knowledge in a way that makes it particularly accessible for food technologists, breeders, students, and teachers.

Grain yield and end-use quality are the most important characteristics for hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivium L.). Improvement of grain quality characteristics of grain from a given growing season and location requires systematic understanding of the genotype chosen, the production environment, and also knowing the consequence of rate and time of individual production packages such as seed treatment, seed rate, nitrogen (N) fertilization, and foliar fungicide applications. The objectives of this study were to: identify the effects of seed rate, genotype, and N top-dressed on yield, agronomic characteristics, and end-use quality of winter wheat; and to determine the effects of seed treatment and flag leaf foliar fungicide application on yield and agronomic characteristics of wheat cultivars. Two experiments were conducted at Havelock, near Lincoln, NE and the High Plains Agricultural Lab (HPAL), near Sidney, NE in 2014 and 2015 using randomized complete block design with split factorial arrangement. Overall foliar N increased grain yield, grain protein concentration, other baking quality indicators such as flour water absorption, peak height, tail area, weakening slope, and depressed grain volume weight, mixing time, and tolerance. Similarly, increased seed rate improved grain yield, seed weight, grain volume weight, flour yield, mixing time, and mixing tolerance. Increased seed rate reduced grain protein, flour water absorption, tail area, peak height, and weakening slope. Seed treated with EverGol Energy and Gaucho showed improved seedling emergence, leaf greenness, grain yield, and seed weight. Application of foliar fungicide at flag leaf stage improved grain yield, seed weight, and leaf area. Among the six genotypes evaluated, ‘Settler CL’ and ‘Freeman’ had the highest overall grain yield. The study demonstrated the importance of seeding rate and the existence of a wider than expected tolerance range for seeding rate. The study also demonstrated the importance of in-season nitrogen top dress and foliar fungicide application to increased winter wheat grain yield and grain quality in Nebraska. However, further research is recommended to fine-tune the factors and interdependence of response in relation to a specific location, season or the prevailing weather condition, and the specific attribute of the genotype seeded.
