Book Description
Yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are a popular game and food fish in the Great Lakes region. However, intensive culture of this species in the North Central Region is still in its infancy. In this species, females grow faster and to a larger size than males, making them more valuable in aquaculture. In fact, a population of 1,000 female yellow perch can gross approximately $555 more than the same number of fish exhibiting a 1:1 male:female ratio at the current fillet value of $14 per pound. Attempts have been made to produce monosex populations of yellow perch through sex reversal, but have resulted in the formation of nonfunctional, intersex fish due to the initiation of treatment after the beginning of gonadal differentiation. Yellow perch require more elaborate techniques to conduct sex reversal than many other species due to the beginning of sexual differentiation occurring before the transition to formulated feeds. This thesis consists of two sex reversal experiments carried out in 2015 and 2016. The 2015 studies evaluated the success of hormonal masculinization using the synthetic steroid hormone 17a- methyltestosterone (MT) by two treatment methods, diet enrichment and immersion, as well as two initiation times with respect to fish size, 12 mm and 14 mm total length. This study also evaluated the feminizing capacity of another steroid hormone, estradiol-17ß, in yellow perch exposed via immersion treatments beginning at the same two size classes. All fish were checked for spermiation by manual stripping in late January/early February of 2016. Although the groups that had been exposed to the masculinizing hormone beginning at 12 mm total length displayed significantly more spermiating males than those exposed beginning at 14 mm (P

Book Description
Some investigators have hypothesized that estrogens and other hormonally active agents found in the environment might be involved in breast cancer increases and sperm count declines in humans as well as deformities and reproductive problems seen in wildlife. This book looks in detail at the science behind the ominous prospect of "estrogen mimics" threatening health and well-being, from the level of ecosystems and populations to individual people and animals. The committee identifies research needs and offers specific recommendations to decision-makers. This authoritative volume: Critically evaluates the literature on hormonally active agents in the environment and identifies known and suspected toxicologic mechanisms and effects of fish, wildlife, and humans. Examines whether and how exposure to hormonally active agents occursâ€"in diet, in pharmaceuticals, from industrial releases into the environmentâ€"and why the debate centers on estrogens. Identifies significant uncertainties, limitations of knowledge, and weaknesses in the scientific literature. The book presents a wealth of information and investigates a wide range of examples across the spectrum of life that might be related to these agents.

Book Description
This book elucidates the mechanisms involved in biological membrane functions. It describes the new modalities and characterization for basic in vitro as well as computer models of biological membranes. Biological membranes are analyzed in terms of advances in molecular dynamics. The individual chapters provide an in depth analysis of images from various biological models. The potential of membrane models in the context of treatment trials is discussed. The authors present new insights and current concepts for treatment procedures (nanocarriers, electroporation, channel blockers).

Book Description
In the compiling of this book, the vast literature dealing with the descriptive morphology, histology and cytology of teleost development has been combed and integrated. The book is divided into 21 chapters, starting with the egg and embryonic development up to hatching. This is followed by a description of ectodermal, mesodermal and entodermal derivatives and the development of various organs. The subject index, species index and the abundant illustrations add extra value to this long awaited book. Developmental Biology of Teleost Fishes will be a valuable tool for scientists and students in the fields of biology, developmental biology, molecular biology and fish biology.
