Book Description
Mathematical ecology is a subject which recently attracts attentions of many mathematicians and biologists. One of the most important and fundamental mathematical models in ecology is of Lotka-Volterra type. This book gives global dynamical properties of L-V systems. The properties analyzed are global stability of the equilibria, persistence or permanence of the systems (which ensures the survival of all the biological-species composed of the systems for the long term) and the existence of periodic or chaotic solutions. The special subject of this book is to consider the effects of the systems structure, diffusion of the biological species and time delay on the global dynamical properties of the systems.

Book Description
Surveying a wide variety of mathematical models of diffusion in the ecological context, this book is written with the primary intent of providing scientists, particularly physicists but also biologists, with some background of the mathematics and physics of diffusion and how they can be applied to ecological problems. Equally, this is a specialized text book for graduates interested in mathematical ecology -- assuming no more than a basic knowledge of probability and differential equations. Each chapter in this new edition has been substantially updated by appopriate leading researchers in the field and contains much new material covering recent developments.

Book Description
As a diffusion process in an ecosystem tends to give rise to a uniform density of population in space, it may be expected that diffusion plays a general role of increasing the stability in a system of mixed populations and resources. However, diffusion may also induce an instability to a system which is basically stable without diffusion. Thus a system of two interacting and diffusing populations both being co-existent in a spatially uniform distribution, hence with no patterns, may exhibit an interaction-diffusion instability. The instability results in a form of biological waves in space and time, thus leading to a 'patchiness.' (Author).

Book Description
This volume contains contributed papers authored by participants of a Conference on Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems which was held at the Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisbon, Portugal). The conference brought together a large number of specialists in the area of differential equations and dynamical systems and provided an opportunity to celebrate Professor Waldyr Oliva's 70th birthday, honoring his fundamental contributions to the field. The volume constitutes anoverview of the current research over a wide range of topics, extending from qualitative theory for (ordinary, partial or functional) differential equations to hyperbolic dynamics and ergodic theory.
