A Southern Collection

Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 9780820315355
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
A Southern Collection presents select masterworks from the permanent collection of the Morris Museum of Art on the occasion of the institution's inaugural exhibition. Drawn from a comprehensive survey collection of painting in the South from the late eighteenth century to the present day, the museum's opening exhibit explores an artistic terrain as rich and diverse as the South itself, arranged in categories that reflect critical chronological developments in the art world. A survey of painting activity in the South begins with the travels of itinerant portrait artists working prior to the Civil War. At the same time, landscape painting encompasses a sensitive response to the swamps, bayous and fertile fields of the South. Late in the nineteenth century strong and vivid genre painting competes with the nostalgic effects realized by Southern impressionists, whose shimmering, liquid images are invested with an elusive spirit of place. In this century, those strains of realism and naturalism that characterize the classic body of Southern writing appear in the representational art of painters who defied the modern abstract dictum. And finally, the exciting, compelling works of a current generation of both self-taught artists and sophisticated contemporary painters complete this fascinating, though sometimes neglected, chapter in American art history.

Warrenton Virginia BISPHAM HOUSE Introduction The House – Part 1 A noteworthy part of this illustrated account is about the Bispham’s who built the house, ca. 1856, at the highest elevation in town (660’ vs. usually claimed point 646’ at Court House Square)) It is called Baptist Hill, for the nearby church and minister’s house next door to the Bispham’s. Soon after the house was built, the Civil War began. Because the town was at an important crossroads and rail branch line terminus, it became an army supply depot. Included are interesting happenings and images of early scenes in Warrenton. All owners to current time are identified along with their caretaking and additions to the property. The house and owners help introduce captivating local and national history. Scrapbook – Part 2 The Scrapbook sections are three fourths of the document where images bring to life local events and people that inform about the Warrenton area through the years including: Historical Maps, slavery, General McClellan's farewell to his troops; distinguished people, visits by Presidents, Lafayette, and former residents: The Great Chief Justice John Marshall, John Singleton Mosby, Anthony Dangerfield, Dangerfield Newby, plus others. Artwork Surprising artworks amplify the local story; many by renowned Richard Norris Brooke; three creative murals by Stewart Burgess White; and three paintings of Mosby’s Berryville Raid; Edwin Austin Forbes, Civil War scenes. The Victorian Novel and the Space of Art
Author: Dehn Gilmore
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107661609
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
This interdisciplinary study argues for the vital importance of visual culture as a force shaping the Victorian novel's formal development and reading history. It shows how authors like Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Wilkie Collins and Thomas Hardy borrowed language and conceptual formations from art world spaces - the art market, the museum, the large-scale exhibition, and art critical discourse - not only when they chose certain subjects or refined certain aspects of realism, but also when they tried to adapt various genres of the novel for a new and newly vociferous mass audience. Quandaries specific to new forms of public display affected authors' sense of their relationship with their own public. Debates about how best to appreciate a new mass of visual information impacted authors' sense of how people read, and consequently the development of particular novel forms like the multi-plot novel, the historical novel, the sensation novel, and fin-de-siècle fiction.
