Book Description
In the Western world, education policy has increasingly become a local matter. Localities and schools adjust education to meet specific local needs, fragmentation and diversity. Globalization and the greater emphasis on knowledge in society however, also embody strong streamlining tendencies. This edited volume examines and compares the way in which local education systems in Britain and Sweden are created in the interplay between common tendencies of change and particular local conditions.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive understanding of how education has developed over the last 70 years within the United Kingdom. As education in Wales and Scotland continues to develop following increasing devolution, the contributors draw from personal accounts and practical experience to provide a comparison and evaluation of these differences. A critical stage in the history of education has been reached, particularly in light of the decision for Britain to leave the European Union: the authors explore the emergent fault lines and identify practical reforms. While this book will undoubtedly be of interest to educational historians, it will also be a valuable reference point for educationalists, practitioners and politicians. The contributors unpick the larger role of education in the United Kingdom and propose practical ways forward amid a time of crisis.

Book Description
During the 1980s and 1990s the elaboration of a reformed system of vocational qualifications was perhaps the most controversial of all the governments efforts to improve the provision of vocational education and training. Based largely on interviews with nearly 100 individuals who were closely involved with these reforms, this book provides an in-depth account of the origins, development and implementation of NVQ and GNVQ policies. In accounting for the progress of vocational qualifications policy three main areas are covered by the book. Firstly the authors look at the origins of the reformed system, then examine the initial implementation of the NVQ and GNVQ policies in the late 1980s and early 1990s and identify the considerable problems that accompanied the reform process. Thirdly, the book focuses on the ways in which the reformed policy was sustained during the 1990s.
