As debate continues over who should get what kinds of aid to attend college, it is important to know what students and their families are actually paying for college, where the money is coming from, and how students' methods of paying vary with their family income and the type of institution they attend. To inform these debates, this report uses data from the 1999-2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:2000) to describe how the families of dependent students used financial aid and their own resources to pay for college, emphasizing variation by family income and type of institution. The study covers students were dependent undergraduates who were full-time at 2-year or 4-year colleges. Approximately one-quarter of all undergraduates met these criteria. For low-income students at each type of institution, the expected family contribution fell short of the price students had to pay, even after financial aid. At public 2-year institutions, students appeared to cover their educational expenses by receiving aid (primarily grants), living at home, and working while enrolled. At public 4- year institutions, they appeared to depend primarily on aid (both grants and loans), and their own earnings, with some help from their parents. It is difficult to see how low income students at private not-for-profit institutions covered their educational expenses, given the gap between the net price and expected family contribution and the amount these students reported earning on their own. It may be that these students reduced their standard of living below the institutionally determined budget, acquired gift or loan funds, or used more of their income or savings than required by the expected family contribution. At public institutions and private not-for- profit nondoctoral institutions, middle income students and their families were in a better position than their low-income counterparts to cover their expenses. The Advanced Study Institute Ice Physics in the Natural and Endangered Environ ment was held at Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, from September 7 to 19, 1997. The ASI was designed to study the broad range of ice science and technology, and it brought together an appropriately interdisciplinary group of lecturers and students to study the many facets of the subject. The talks and poster presentations explored how basic molecular physics of ice have important environmental consequences, and, con versely, how natural phenomena present new questions for fundamental study. This report describes the role of parents in providing financial support for their financially dependent undergraduate children. It presents information on the extent to which parents provide their children with gifts, loans, and in-kind contributions; the amounts they provide; how the amounts compare with the expected family contributions determined by the student financial aid system; and the various types of savings and loan programs that parents use. The report used data from the 1986-87 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study to identify parents of 27,415 undergraduate students; these parents were sent questionnaires. Report highlights include the following: (1) 92 percent of financially dependent undergraduates received gifts (67 percent), loans (11 percent), or in-kind contributions (83 percent) from their parents, averaging $3,274; (2) white students were more likely to receive gifts than black students (70 percent versus 43 percent); (3) overall, 42 percent of the students had parents who saved to help them with their postsecondary education; (4) among the students whose parents saved, 46 percent had started when the student was in elementary school or before; (5) among students whose parents saved, 71 percent had set up accounts in the parents' names; and (6) only 14 percent of the students had parents who assumed one or more types of loans.
